Question M6 GC Potential UK Buyer Questions (servicing + warranty costs)

Hi all,

I've joined this forum as the M6 GC has appeared on my radar as a contender for my next car.
I'd been looking at a pre-owned 640d GC but then looking at the pre-owned market, the jump to a M6 isn't as big as you might expect considering the list price of each. Here in the UK M6's seem to dump about 50% of their value (list price) in 18-24 months.

I'd most like by a car from the main dealer network which comes with a 12 month warranty - which I assume is equivalent to the manufacturer warranty.

Does anyone have any idea what it costs to extend the warranty via the dealer network by an additional 1 or 2 years? The salesman I spoke with whist looking at an M6 Cabrio yesterday was vague on costs, as he was with servicing costs.

I understand the the M6 runs the same service internals (i.e. condition based) as the rest of the BMW range, so given I do around 7k miles per year, I'd expect to get 18-24 months between services.

If a potential car didn't have the service inclusive pack - what cost would I be looking at for a minor & major service on an M6 GC. I've asked a couple of main dealers this question and neither could give a straight answer.

In general is the running gear in the M6 reliable if driven sensibly? I've zero plans to take the car on the track and I'm relatively conservative and sympathetic to the car in my driving style.

Any other things to watch out for and general buying advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Darren..

you can get an idea of warranty, simply find a comparable car to one you are looking to buy i.e. year, then enter its details on the BMW GB Warranty website, it'll then give you a quote.

Also don't be fooled that these things are the same as a 640d re running costs wise, service, fuel, repairs, tax will all be expensive. For me warranty is a must as is the service pack. Its my view others may disagree, i would suggest you only buy from a franchised dealer for peace of mind. Also these cars are at that stage where they are falling into 2 camps i.e. the dogs and cherished ones and this is reflected in the price, condition and history. My advice is to be picky and wait it out if need be.

Cheers for this info. Re: the fuel & tax costs, I know what these are going to be and only doing 6-7k miles per year makes the fuel cost acceptable.

Once I'm out of the service pack, any idea what a major/minor service costs?

Agreed on the dogs vs. cherished - time is on my hands so I can wait and be picky as you say, but does anyone have any clues or tips as the best method to spot a dog - is it simply on interior/exterior condition or are there other things to watch out for?

Extended warranty (Comprehensive with full breakdown) cost me just over a grand with £100 excess. It could have been as little as £850 with a £250 excess, or as much as £1300 with zero excess. The car's done nearly 50k now, and i've done 20k in the year I've had it - no problems at all. Averaging 20mpg. I've had one service - oil/microfilter/reardiff oil - that was £450. Hope that helps

Extended warranty on my M6 GC for 1 year with no excess was £1125 from BMW which includes emergency breakdown. It also depends on your mileage as once you hit over 60k the cost will rise. My mileage is around 25k at the moment.

Hope this helps

It used to be that if you opted for the monthly direct debit rather than paying annually, you didn't suffer the extra cost when you hit that mileage limit. Not sure if that's still the case...

Many thanks for these details. £850 with a £250 excess doesn't seem too bad at all and the service at £450 seems reasonable if I could stretch the service intervals to 18-24 months, which given my 6.5k annual mileage sounds feasible.

I took an M6 GC on a test drive and was very impressed, the DCT box wasn't as snatchy as expected and with a light foot on the test drive across urban and some dual carriageway driving it returned 24mpg. With the suspension in comfort mode it delivered a good ride quality and the exhaust wasn't overly shouty on a light throttle.

I think I'm going to try and find a car from a main dealer just for peace of mind which would include 12 months warranty anyway.

Thanks for all the info folks.

Its still the case, my f10 has done 70k miles now and i have had no price hike since taking out the policy when the car had done less than 60k miles a few years ago.

OP - what year / age are you looking at?

Plain servicing isn't the worry, it's things like £500 spark plugs every 30k or so, or £1500 for front discs and pads.

And generally inflated bullshit prices at BMW dealers as soon you say "m6"

There's a reason they lose over 50grand in 2 years!

We know what we are getting into when we purchase one of these things, its never going to be run on a shoe string and any expectation that it will are wrong of course.

By the way Doughboy, 3months and counting my M6s is still off the road being fixed.

Hi Taheer,

Yes, depreciation can make these cars appear a used bargain compared to new, they are still made of expensive parts!

Wow 3 months? Any news on when it will be sorted? I hope they've given you a decent courtesy car.

Yes, i went to view my car last week to snag it before its return, after i finished there were those blue sticky circle dots everywhere, frankly I'm surprised the body shop didn't pick up these issues. Any how the body work is sorted, however I'm still not happy with the way in which the new leather seat covers have been fitted as the leather is loose in places and saggy, i think a trimmer will be required to sort this. id also say the service from Sytner Oldbury Bodyshop is not great and its getting to a stage where they think i will loose interest before them and take it back as is, suffice to say that will never happen.

In the meantime i have been given the below from BMW GB as a run around, which i shall keep for the foreseeable, its a nice drive however and M6 is an M6 at the end of day.
