Oil Consumption

My car just hit 3500 miles. Barely broken in I got a message on my screen to add 2 quarts of oil. I stopped by the local dealer and they topped it off. What is your experience/ knowledge about oil consumption etc.,

Upon delivery back in April 2015 I noticed that I had a broken lock in the center console. As I brought back for the repair to my dealer and they also did an oil change. I thought that was very strange since the car had 7 miles on it but they said that from production date to delivery date it has been a full year and BMW calls for an oil change. Crazy

Cars broken in the hard method seat the piston rings correctly and makes it so the engine does not eat oil in my experience over a few turbocharged BMW's. The method is bringing the car to redline slowly in first gear and letting it slow itself down about 3 times right when the car is brand new. Then drive it like you want, and change the oil at 1200 miles.

that's funny...i had the exact same things. added 2 quarts just a few thousand miles in, which slightly freaked me out a bit, but figured it was breakin period.

and my center lock was also busted and quickly fixed.

prior to that was the drivetrain malfunction, which was not resurfaced. did your rear tow cover pop off too?

I don't even do that. I just start them up for a few and drive off the lot in 1st to redline somewhat slowly and then just let the engine slow me down about 3 times in a row and then drive the car like a beast from then on. My BMW's have never needed oil added like I have seen others. Could be luck, or the break in.

I guess the engines have been warmed up in the 4 cases that I've done it since the cars were idling at the dealer before i would leave and also a test drive before signing the documents but I never really paid attention if they were fully warmed up. Still have not had to add oil in over 5k miles on any of the 4 cars while others would be adding a quart in those 5k miles on the 335, the 6 series, etc.

You guys got me wondering i may have to take my car to the dealer this weekend. Cause i did find it abnormal for it to need oil at 2500 miles in.

All they are going to do is top it off. I would just buy a couple quarts and keep it in the trunk and do it yourself to avoid the dealer. Either your car has some loose piston rings and eats a good amount of oil, or they didn't fill it full the first time around since it happened at 2500 miles. I don't see them replacing the engine for oil consumption, but that would really be the only solution.

I have not had the issue since it first occurred. They topped it off and the car maintains good levels now. 9K miles and no issues...

BMW considers a quart every 1,000 miles "normal" I believe.

As in "cheaper to give you a lot of oil than rebuild the engine "

The N63TU engine has a giant oil sump, 9 liters for an oil change. Add 1.5 quarts if you get the low oil warning and check the level 800 miles later.

Right now my 650i is half way between full and low on I-Drive, going to add a quart in the next day or two. My 650i goes through a quart every 4-5K miles.

Actually gives me something to do.
