Looking for a shop

Recently I went to my local auto repair shop and got a quote of $380 to install my lowering springs.

I'm located in Brooklyn, New York. Does that sound like a reasonable price or is he trying to jerk me because of the vehicle I drive?

It's on the higher end for sure, it usually costs $250-300 in Socal so he's just gouging a little.

Take a drive to NJ over at AutoCouture. It's alittle hike but those dudes work on M cars and live it like no other Indy. Or at least call for a quote. Ask for Tommy. He knows everything about our cars. You can even hang out and watch them do the work! If your going out to Rallye this weekend, they will also be there. Tell'em Mark with the Sakhir O M6 GC sent you. Tommy will hook you up.

places like SF or NYC don't charge the same as we get in socal. their rent, cost of living, etc is higher, so shops charge accordingly. my sister lives in the city (SF) and had a tire blow out. my friend owns a tire shop down here and give me wholesale pricing, I went to visit and brought her a tire. a shop in the city charged me $50-60 to dismount, mount and balance one new tire. whenever something breaks or she needs service, they charge double for everything compared to what the prices are in socal. a shop like GMG will ask for $5-600 to install springs, $380 is not that bad for NYC.

There's some truth to what you're saying but, just to put in springs that's a over usual charge.

Basically, you're agreeing that $380 is a good price?

Yes, that put you into $70-$75/hr labor rate.
In CA is different since so many shops around which competing against each other.

It takes 2 hours for a shop with a lift normally, mine were done in 45mins and I still paid $250 for the job because that is what I agreed to. If it takes any shop 4-5 hours to change out springs, they're in the wrong business.

Was that for rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive? I am looking here in Denver at somewhere around $700 to $900 for install and align and that is the cheapest that I found.
