Soft tops look better on cars with a coupe variant. While hardtops are for cars without them and were designed solely as hard tops.

Example: 3er convertible looks stupid. Z4 looks amazing. SL Mercedes looks amazing. SLS convertible will be soft top. Finally the cherry on the cake, Bentley and Rolls-Royce use soft tops and those are the classiest cars money can buy.

Hard top on the 6er would look stupid.

Can someone explain this to me? Why softtop? 335 has a hard top? Is the only feasible argument the weight savings? And in that case, anyone who is buying a convert vs coupe already doesn't care about the weight?

Based on the 6 series discussion by BMW - the hardtop's lines arent as sexy as the soft top -- BMW says in the future they may take the 3 series vert back to a soft top because its not 'sexy' enough.

For cars with 4 seats a softtop is alot better, much more classy. Why then do the Bentley Continental GTC, Aston Martin DB9 Volant have softtop? For cars with 2 seats a hardtop is very nice, like Z4 and SLK, eventhough I would like a Z4 Coupé(-ONLY). My favorite top for two seater however is Tagra, like the Porsche Carrera GT, Toyota Supra and such.

I like the look of the 3-series E93. I would prefer a hardtop over a softtop on the M6. Yes, it adds weight, but it would a trade off I'd be willing to make. I suspect the problem is the relative size of the top on the new 6 compared to the truck space. To make a hard top fit they trunk would have to be made larger, and the car (which is already quite large) would need to be even larger.
