6 series experts: EXHAUST!
I need some help from fellow 6 series owners regarding exhaust options. All I'm looking to do is get the black quad tip look and also the rear valence + diffuser of the M6 added to my 650GC.
It sounds like the fitment of the M6 rear valence and diffuser will be seamless with my Msport rear bumper. My question is on the exhaust. To get black quad tips, it looks like certain M6 takeoffs or Dinan would be the only options. M6 takeoffs seem to be pretty available, as many M6 owners opt to upgrade. This is where I have a few questions. 1. Is the diameter of the 650 exhaust the same as the M6 exhaust @ the muffler inlet? Thus could M6 mufflers be seamlessly added to a 650??? 2. Are the tips on the M6 exhaust removable? In other words, could I buy someone's M6 mufflers with chrome tips and easily change them to black tips? I appreciate any knowledge you can share! |

2. Yes, they are removable. Not easily, but they come off.

no - its not the same there. They need to pinch the 650 pipe a touch to fit inside the larger pipe of the M6. They need room to work. could do at at 6" or 2 feet if you really wanted to. It works just fine. Several people have done this without issue.

I'm running M6 mufflers on my 640 without issues. The N55's come with 2.5" piping and the M6 mufflers are ~3" but any reputable muffler shop can seamlessly weld on the pipe. Your N63 has a 2.75" diameter pipe, I believe, so mounting the M6 cans won't be an issue. Plus, you have the option of installing an exhaustmeister down the line, which I can't do on my 640. I'm using CF 3.5" tips on mine. BTW, if you're looking for black tips, Megan also has them on their M6 mufflers. The advantage in having OE M6 mufflers is that they come with valves, which others may not. Performance wise, you won't notice a difference compared to stock. Sound-wise, with the valves open, the mufflers are pretty loud but not straight pipe loud. With the valves closed, it's quiet like stock. I think Dinans are much tamer in sound and Megans are right in the middle.

...so the valve system on the M6 mufflers will integrate with the 650 stock setup? That would be awesome if true.
So how hard is it to change the tips on the M6 setup? Are they welded in place or attached in some other way? I'm more interested in the quad tip appearance than I am in louder sound. Sounds like the M6 system is pretty tame with the valves closed??? I feel like my valves are closed most of the time, minus cold starts and flooring it from time to time.... |

They tips aren't welded on. They use a friction system to hold them in place. hard to describe but you will be able to see it. The tips slide into the outlet pipe from exhaust. There are metal retaining flaps inside the tips that grab the exhaust outlet pipe and hold it tight.

Exactly what upstate650 said. If you look at your mufflers, you'll see a vacuum line that's plugged in. The M6 mufflers will work the exact same way. You have all the hardware to control it in your trunk area so down the line, if you decide you want to pick up an exhaustmeister, you can open the valves remotely. The tips just come off my twisting it and wiggling it out. When I first installed mine, I wanted a louder sound so I used wire to hold the valves open, which is common practice amongst M5 and M6 owners. It was a bit loud for everyday driving so now I only have the right side valve open and for me, it's perfect, especially with a baby in the back. As you can see in the pic, the muffler shop just welded on a mandrel bent enlarger pipe to connect the 2.5" pipe to the 3" M6 pipe. Next to Remus, these M6 mufflers have been my favorite for less than 1/2 the price of an aftermarket.

Bumping this thread since it's pretty new and my question is semi relevant in here. I've heard a ton of clips of Muffler deletes on 650s and I have decided this is the first path I want to take with exhaust. I know some of you may have issues with doing the delete but please accept that this is what I am doing. It is completely reversible so if I hate it, it's only 2-300 bucks to bring back to normal. At the same time, I am also changing out my 650 diffuser with an M6 one and then adding a v style diffuser that wraps around the bottom, enclosing the exhaust tips. I want quad 4" Blue tips (think Megan racing) that have a slightly staggered look. I am struggling if I need a 2.5" inlet or 3" inlet. Does anybody have knowledge as to what I need? I can find lots of 2.5" inlets but 3" inlet with staggered is damn near impossible with the burnt blue tips. I thought I had read somewhere that we need 3" so I may just need to go with chrome tips which I have found. See below.

Good to see this topic bumped. My plan is to go with an M6 diffuser and move to black quad tips from the stock 650 trapezoid. I love the way this car sounds as it is.
New question... What are the muffler exit tube diameters on the stock 650 mufflers??? Need this info on my quest to find black tips that will work. Also, what diameter are stock M6 quad exhaust tips??? Thanks |

ndinh and upstate to the rescue again. Thanks fellas for the input. I hadn't thought of the y pipe to the singles. I do love the CF tips but I think they may get lost in the CF diffuser and black car. With the burnt blue tips, I think the little bit of "pop" would look great.
Upstate...guessing the last thing you said is likely due to drone right? If so, that is definitely a concern but I have owned a bunch of mustangs and have always enjoyed that noise a little bit. Guess we will have to see. |

I think the drone will definitely be there. I just had my AC Schnitzer exhaust installed this week and there is a bit of drone at around 1800 rpms under load, which is where you cruise at 77-80 mph. It's not too bad but it's there, even with a high end system. Exhaust is a very personal choice and your opinion is the only one that matters. I hope you enjoy it!
I've had a couple mustangs as well, so I know what you mean. |

Why? Any y pipe out there will have exactly 4" of spacing center to center between the dual outs. Therefore, unless you want your burnt blue quad tips touching each other (I think this looks no good as I want .25" to .5" of spacing between), you've gotta find the complete set up. Since the 650 has a 2.75" pipe, you can either use a 3.0" inlet or a 2.5" inlet (3.0 is ideal but doesn't matter). I have searched all of the web that I can and I can not find a setup with the following: * 4" quad tips * Staggered & slant cut * Either 3.0 or 2.5" inlet The staggered is the real deal breaker. You can find a non-staggered set-up in burnt blue but I think our cars absolutely need a staggered setup. Therefore, I am now going with the below tips. I still think the 3.5" wide quads will look great after seeing ndinh's tips. Hope this helps anybody in the future. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231697908662...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT |
