New Member 14 M6 GC- weird "bird-chirping" sound from mid section???
Hi All,
Long time lurker here, 4 time BMW owner (330i, x5, m3, now m6GC). Hoping you all can chime in / help. My car (14 M6 GC with comp pkg) is still under break in ~950 miles on the clock and just recently the car has developed this very strange noise on acceleration and deceleration but only when the engine/drivetrain is cold. Also happens during revs in neutral. I can only describe this sound as "birds chirping" and it seems to be coming from under the front driver and passenger section of the car (ie mid section). Since this noise only happens during warm up (completely goes away once car is at operating temp) I am guessing it's a faulty gasket of some sort in the exhaust system? Video attached. Also taking the car in tomorrow morning to Beverly Hills BMW. Interested to hear your thoughts...please chime in if anyone has had a similar experience. Car is 100 percent stock. Cheers! Sounds more like a bearing noise to me rather than blowing exhaust.

Let us know what you find out from the dealership. I had a similar noise (wasn't as loud). We put it up on the lift at BMW as it seemed to be coming from inside the exhaust (was not anything mechanical squeaking/rubbing). We kinda blew it off as nothing too important but it wasn't as loud as yours but similar. I am not sure if it's still there as I have not noticed it lately. Keep us posted though. Thanks!

IMO
It is absolutely in the exhaust system, the metal when gets hot expands and the sound disappear. Make the dealer check it starting from the cats down to the mufflers and replace as many parts of it until the sound vanish. Good luck and enjoy.

It's definitely exhaust. Either the valve or something else inside the exhaust.
I know a guy had dealer his exhaust replaced!

Interestingly enough the sound in mine started when I had the OEM downpipes swapped out with the catless DPs (at least that is when I noticed it). Your sound is DEFINITELY louder than mine but it's the same "bird chirping sound" and the sound would come into play on mine when I revved it.
I am really interested to know what solution your dealership comes up with because I am going to re-visit my car to see if the sound is still there. Brian

Thanks guys for the feedback, really appreciate it.
I dropped off the car this morning, explained what was happening, took the BMW tech on a ride along and then provided the vid. Service rep and BMW tech were both very cool and detailed so I am hoping for a good outcome. Also getting my break in service taking care of in parallel albeit a bit early (950miles). Will definitely keep you guys posted. Cheers! |

Hi Guys,
Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Just giving everyone an update. After leaving my car at Beverly Hills BMW for 2 weeks (which ended up being ok because I was traveling during that time), I finally picked up my car. Cause for the rattling/chirping noise on cold start was Exhaust Flange Gaskets (leaking), so the tech remove the exhaust system and replaces the gaskets throughout. Problem solved. He had to special order parts, etc hence the delay but otherwise all is well and good. It should be noted that my service adviser, Will Rodriguez was extremely helpful and just great guy overall, even allowed me to go into the shop and tour around, see my car, meet the shop foreman, etc. One errant thing, when I got my car back there was a sizable gash in the front tire. Will is doing his best to get it replaced by the dealer, otherwise all is well and good. Hope this helps anyone else that may have a similar problem. Cheers, Chris |

Thank you for the great info, I just starting to hear this noise from my car too, only near the left driver side. Our local dealers are really bad... they still couldn't identify the problem, maybe this is the same thing, I will ask them to check the exhaust flange gasket and hopefully it will solve the problem!!
