Need buying advice :/

What's up guys I'm new to this forum.

Have never owned one but always loved BMW since the 90s (best era imo).

However I'm interested in the 650i and I'm seeing one in my area, a 2013 convertible 6 cyl with 88k.

It's listed at $19k. I'm gonna inquire soon
but what's some things I should look out for?
Or should I avoid this one altogether due to the price and mileage for it being a 2013?

Any insight helps, thanks!

There wasn't a 6 cylinder 650i. So either you are looking at a 640i, or the car has 8 cylinders. Which is it?

If it is a 6 cylinder, the consensus is that that engine is bullet proof.

Yes, the 6 cylinder is pretty bullet proof as Walt said, but has common oil leaks. Most are not too terrible to fix (valve cover gasket being most common), but the oil pan commonly develops leaks, and if the car is XDrive that will be pretty expensive to fix - like $2,500+. Also, I don't know how much options mean to you, but the 640s typically have fewer than 650s. If there is a link to the car for sale we could look at it and maybe give you some more advice. At a minimum I'd have a mechanic check it specifically for oil leaks, paying particular attention to the oil pan.

These are some screenshots of the post. It's an M Sport package.

Wow, this a seller who does not know what car he has. That is an 8 cylinder engine, thus it is a 650, and it is NOT an MSport car.

Somebody put an MSport steering wheel on it, or else removed the MSport bumpers, but I'm sure it's just the steering wheel. Do you have the VIN and I can tell you what options it has and does not have. From the few pics in your post it appears to be typically optioned - leather dash and center console, ceramic knobs, LED headlights, but does not have the B&O stereo or massaging seats, or adaptive cruise or night vison (the last 2 are rare in 2013). I can't tell what else from those few photos.

Also, I am seeing a red flag on this car that makes me suspicious, especially when it is listed by somebody who does not know what the car is. There is supposed to be a large rubber seal in two pieces that goes all the way around the opening of the engine compartment. You can look at online pics of other 650s to see what I'm talking about. It is totally missing on this car. There are really only two good reasons to completely remove that seal - a fairly major mechanical repair or major body work. It could be nothing (although you need the seal and it is probably not cheap) but I'd sure look into it deeper.

Second red flag - look at the BMW logo on the front bumper. It's not straight. My guess is that car was in a wreck and was fixed by people who do not pay attention to detail.

I'm going to say it is an Msport, but when it was wrecked a second rate body shop ordered a non Msport front. It has the steering wheel, door sill plates, and the sport buttons next to the shifter.

I would pass on it because of the shady work. Definite front end work on that car:
-Crooked BMW logo
-Missing seal
-Headlight fitment

Good catch on the sill plates (although they all have the sport buttons). OP, I think this probably confirms that this car is even worse than I thought - it's a butchered hybrid and you should not consider it further. I'll say 2 other things in response to your original post. I think the price is about right for a car like that if it were in the correct configuration and not wrecked. Second, I would not really be afraid to buy one with those miles if it looks to have been taken care of. Also, depending on how you intend to use it, you might consider XDrive instead of RWD since you live in Utah. I daily my XDrive 2015 year-round in Colorado. Finally, I will say what I often say in response to posts like yours - these cars are rare enough that I would not limit yourself to "in my area." I look nationwide, then go fly and drive it home. Anyway, happy to look at the next one on your radar screen.

@ Opie55 Man you got me crackin up 😂😂 you caught a lot I didn't even see. Definitely too many red flags I'm not even gonna inquire about that one, but good point. I absolutely will be looking in different areas. Anywhere but the rust belt due to all that salt they use for snow up there

You won't find many of these in the rust belt anyway, but for cars like these that were garaged and used mostly in nice weather it's not really too much of an issue. I had a Mercedes convertible from New York that was as clean as the day it left Germany.

Ditto Opie in regard to the f12 for sale in the rust belt. More than likely they weren’t driven daily during the winter months…but mostly garaged for most of the winter.

But then there’s another thing about the f12/f13/f06…their body panels are either plastic or aluminum…only the roof on the hard top coupes (2 & 4 door) are made of steel. So body rust isn’t an issue with this model.

You can see what the material the body panels are made of in the chart below. Unfortunately…the rear body panels (#4) was not listed…but I think they are a plastic polymer compound just like the front fenders (#1)…at least the rear bumper is plastic.

On the F12 anyway the rear quarters are steel I believe. So front to back it's plastic, aluminum and steel. But regardless, I doubt there is an F12 in the country with body rust. The only real issue if they are driven in winter is corrosion on everything else - steel bolts underneath and that white crusty/fuzzy stuff that forms on aluminum. But it's more cosmetic than anything although bolts can be harder to remove sometimes. But I doubt many F12s have even that.

Thanks for the back up on the rear panels (#4). I honestly could not remember…and was trying to think how it felt the last time I washed it…but could only think of the rear bumper…which is plastic.

I do wonder how something so obvious gets missed when a chart like the above is put together. Was there only one person on the review committee?
