M6 recalls: "CHECK AND REPLACE DRIVESHAFT"

Hi Folks

Was researching used M6's and saw this in one of the car fax reports.

"Manufacturer Safety recall issued
NHTSA #16V-540
Recall # 16V-540:226
CHECK AND REPLACE DRIVESHAFT
Status: Remedy Available"

Its for a low miles 2015 M6 vert.

How serious and widespread is the above recall? Has it been discussed already here (I did a quick search but didnt find anything)

Even if it has been fixed, should I assume a car with the above problem should not be touched with a 100-foot pole?

I have a 2014, never heard of this recall...

but If its just a recall its Nothing to worry about and doesnt even mean it was an issue to begin with.. all cars have recalls, and a drive shaft is just a simple swap with another one thats been slightly modified to prevent some sort of future issue.. I have bought over 30 cars and had 3 M's .. this would Not be a concern to me at all esp if it was taken care of properly at the dealer.. Buy with confidence.. also this will not have any effect on the cars value now or in the future.

I researched this on NHTSA site and nothing came up.

Running a google search on "NHTSA #16V-54" only linked to this thread. odd

I think the recall referenced in the OP is for the F8x M3/M4 as there is a recall campaign for carbon fiber driveshaft on the F8x M3/M4. Nothing for M5/M6 AFAIK.

Thanks guys. What you point out above was exactly what I found when I researched if. No information at all. Yet the car fax on one of the cars I was really interested in showed this. I will call the seller and ask him about it.

Thanks - that's very helpful and confidence building . I will call and discuss the car with the seller ...and see what I learn.

I would judge it by the price of the car
If it sounds too good to be true, then there probably is an issue
If the price sounds like fair value, then less chance of an underlying issue

I stand corrected. There IS a recall for driveshaft failure on some 2015 M5/M6 production.

thanks for the followup. Too bad hard to buy a car with this even if it hads been recalled and fixed.

I just got this letter a few days ago. My car is within the production period. I haven't had any issues yet and my car was tuned to around 720 hp back in May.

Hi folks - anyone else effected by this? Is EVERY CAR manufactured in the window listed above problematic or a random set within them? And is the fix easy and reliable enough?

I am on the verge of buying a used 2015 m6 very that has abuild date in the above window ....wondering if the "fix" is solid enough that I shouldn't worry ....

So my shortlisted car is definitely affected by the recall. The dealer is checking the remedy etc.

Anyone able to share experiences if your car had the same recall and how confident are you and BMW that the remedy makes it good as new?

FYI - I kicked the tyres on this and was convinced through a very close friend and BMW dealer owner that its not a big deal. Just signed the deal and will be the owner of a 2015 San marino/Opal white M6 Vert this weekend
