M2 to GTR?
Does anyone jump from an M2 to a 2017 GTR?
I am thinking to invest on a car for the next 20 years using it during weekends and keep it in a good condition. My M2 purchased brand new and has all the M Performance goodies, full PPF and ceramic coating on top. Currently my M2 is my daily car drive it for around 500 km per month. I am not sure if M2 IS THE CAR or I need to jump asap to a keeper and 2017 GTR is most probably first in my list. My challenge is that the car will be RHD and in future o have to relocate to EU mainland but I consider this will not be an issue as the car will never be used on a daily basis. Any thoughts are more than welcome. |

I? dont think there's anything much more special with the GTR over an m2. Just more of a straight line car

I do not have contacts with Porsche dealer.
I am close with BMW, Nissan and Jaguar dealer. My concern is that although M2 is a great car is not a keeper. BMW is changing a lot the car character by introducing is 2 years 3 variants such as pre LCI, LCI, and new CS. On the other hand GTR 2017 is the last GTR with full petrol engine. Next generation R36 will use hybrid power. Of course GTR is not a daily driving car like the M2 and that is why I am not sure I need it. Point is that after M2 I do not consider any BMW model as I believe M2 is by far the best fun to drive BMW. I had M Performance 430i before the M2 and obviously there is huge gap between the two cars. |

I thought the GTR was much more renown for its prodigious grip in the corners over the straight line speed. In any case, I'd take the R34 once it turns 25.

Cars are not investment for sure.
My statement above is to invest my time and emotions regarding the car. In the last 7 years I have change various cars with M2 to be current top of the range but I never feel that any of them was a keeper. I do not expect to make money if I sell the car after some years. Manual car with 2+2 seats in a price range close to M3-M4-GTR and similar price range in EU is only the 911. Problem is that moving from M2 to 911 needs at least GTS leading to a double price. |

Completely different car. I had an early R35 GT-R, big heavy, rocket in a straight line especially at low speed due to big power and lots of grip. Understeers on entry, oversteers on exit if too much gas is applied. Expensive consumables. The experience is closer to a 2 door M6 than a M2.

The m2 is potentially one of the last manual M's (if yours is manual) In the long run I can imagine the m2 being a better keepers car than an R35.

all youll get is worse paint an eve more cheap interior and a muchhhhhh faster straight line car. youll lose emotion and fun though and honestly m2 is enough to put you in jail. the 600+ hp range is just playing with death tbh with you.

For a weekend car it has to be something you can get yourself in trouble with. To me that isn't really the GTR but to be fair I haven't driven anything new.
What you really want is the new 911T. Your weekend drive should be an occasion. No car is an investment, but at least an edition Porsche will depreciate less than the GTR or M2. Out of all of them the M2 will depreciate the most. I dunno the M2 has a fairly cheap interior and is underpowered. It could use another 40hp IMO.

I sold my 2014 GTR before I bought the M2. The GTR is closer to a roller coster than a car. Its stupid levels of grip and power. That being said, it sounds like a giant blow dryer and is horrible at low speeds. I daily drove that car and while doing mundane things it felt like a nissan altima. Only enjoyable when really driving hard!

The GTR's performance compared to the M2 is a level above, but you are also paying close to double for it. Also from all the reviews I've seen, it is a great machine that is fast as hell and handles like it's on rails. But most of it is done by the electronics and is a very blend car in terms of driver involvement. So if you want a fast car that is easy to drive fast that doesn't require as much skills and driver involvement, then the GTR may be the way to go if money is not an issue.
Also as mentioned, Nissan never really fixed the transmission issue. There are still issues with the newer ones here and there and they cost about $15k to replace. Again, if your pockets are deep enough, I guess it wouldn't matter. |

I feel like the M2 is a rare car (amongst new ones) that still has some soul. The R35, while capable and fast, just doesn't give me that feeling, so it's hard for me to truly recommend the transition.
Either way, I think Porsche (GT or air-cooled cars) is one of the only instances where you'd see a solid "investment" over 20 years...but I would enjoy the heck out of an M2 right now, especially with a few mods. Let me know if we can help
