For a regular N63 engine, it's way too much. However, for the S63 engine, many M5 owners, incl. myself are drinking oil at a crazy rate.

For me, 1st 7000km, 1 litre top up for every 1000km. Beyond 7000km, 1 litre top up for every 1500km. dealer service foreman checked bmw service bulletin & said it's normal and the pace of top up will graudally level off.

Not sure yet whether it is a problem but the engine surely burns through an unusual amount of oil. Never had such an issue with my previous BMW's but this is my first V8. Again, not sure whether that has anything to do with it.

The engine no doubt felt smoother after topping up the oil. Might be part of the break-in process as indicated by ipsedixit earlier.
My E46 M3 burned through oil (a quart) at about a 5k clip.

Thanks for sharing. That's comforting to know.

Given the limited distances and predominantly city driving, the vehicle is in low gear most of the time. That may contribute to the additional oil burn. Once again, I am no expert.

I owned an E92 335i before this 650i. I did not top up oil once in the entire 5 years of ownership. This is a first for me. Very strange.

My E46 M3 never needed oil between oil changes.

That's old time philosophy, before pure synthetic oil and computer designed engines were introduced. Also, it was good for business (especial oil companies and Jiffy Lubes).

I would never take a brand new BMW to Jiffy Lube for 3 reasons:
1. The high school mechanic would be looking for an oil dip stick.
2. They would not use BMW oil or oil filter (unless you provide it, then that's $70 for oil + $20-30 for labor)
3. They wouldn't have the BMW oil filter tool, so probably going to use a pipe wrench.

I'm very anal about changing oil myself. I'm edgy about the 15k oil change thing, so I take it to the dealers for the "free" change and I change the oil myself between changes. If you don't have a garage, just pay the BMW dealer $100. It would be only a $30 savings doing it yourself.

I would go to dealership every time the oil light comes on. They top it off for free and you can officially document the visit. Based what I'm reading from other threads, the top off will become less frequent over time.

I'm not sure if it's that convenient to get to a BMW dealership in Macau. Another method record a video of each top offs.

Keep us posted as you log more miles.

Macau is a tiny tiny place. Getting to the dealer is a 15 min drive for me. So far they have only sold one F13 650i and recently an M6. So the 6'ers do get their full attention. Will keep everyone posted.

I took delivery of my 650i GC on February 29. I just hit 1,244 miles this past Tuesday, and the low oil reading popped up on my idrive screen. The next Wednesday, I stopped in to the BMW service center I have been using since 2009, and had to pay for a quart of oil for the top off. ($7 'n' change)While I was paying for the quart of oil from the parts desk, I went ahead and ordered the gloss black kidney grilles for her at the same time, lol.

I see now that it seems to be somewhat common for this engine to burn through oil rather quickly. As it has been stated in this tread a couple of times, that I hope the oil comsuption rate improves over time in this awesome machine.

If anyone has any feedback as to me having to pay for the quart of oil for a one month old BMW with just over 1000 miles, please chime in for me. I wasn't upset that I had to pay for it, and 7 bucks is nothing to cry over, but when I asked the SA why I had to pay for the oil top off for a vehicle that is covered by the maitenance warranty, and is just over a month old, he told me that this visit doesn't fall under the scheduled maintenance plan, so I would have to pay them for topping off the oil level.

Like I said, I like this service center, and they took excellent care of my X6 for years, but I found it odd that was the reason I got for having to pay for oil. Tell me what you think of this, and if that is just normal practice and I should just move on. (Not that I am holding on)... just sharing my oil top off experience.

I have never been asked to pay anything for oil top-up so far. Four visits in total since I took ownership of the car last November.

Thanks for sharing that. I did feel that something like that should have been covered at no expense for me. My usual SA got promoted/relocated, so the "SA" must have either pulled a fast one on me, or he just doesn't know better. If it happens again, I will insist on bEing covered at no cost.

You should not have to pay for oil "top offs". One quart at 1200 miles is excessive.

I have the same problem. Picked up the car brand new end of October last year at the dealership. Have now around 3500 miles and had to refill oil already 4 times. First time I had to refill it at about 1200 miles. The second time I went to the dealership, they had to fill up even 2 quarts until the oil level was at max again.

According to SA it's normal for a V8 engine to fill up oil every 800 miles and last time he even gave me two additional bottles to take home, so i won't have to go to them all the time. Even it's for free and I don't have to pay for it, it's really annoying to refill oil every 800 miles.

Not sure if that's really normal or if there is any problem with the engine/oil consumption.

There is NO WAY one quart every 800 miles is normal. Your SA is nuts. Based on all I have read on all forums, assuming a somewhat reliable sample size, I would say 4000 to 5000 miles per quart is "normal" for the N63 and N63Tu. (And even that's a bit high IMO).

Those who consume one quart per 1500 miles or less have a problem that BMW seems reluctant to address. I haven't seen many reports of oil required between 1500 and 4000.

Does anyone know how to post a poll? I suggest for miles per one quart:

0-1500
1500-4000
4000-5000
5000+

My first quart was added at 5200 miles.

My second quart was added 2570 miles later.

I've had my oil changed after that (mid-January) and haven't needed to add any since. I'm currently right around 9980 miles.

my SA mentioned that after 10,000 miles this begins to taper off. I wonder what my options are if I still get the low oil level warning every 800 miles after the 10,000 miles? Can't be possible that I have to drive to my SA every 4-5 weeks to get the oil filled up.

That's definitely excessive. I'm at about 11,500 miles, and I've added 2 quarts, had it changed once during my scheduled service, and maybe had it topped off once more when it was in for other stuff.

any suggestion what to do? seems like the SA doesn't care and tells me all the time that it's normal to add a qt every 800 miles.

I don't think something is right with the oil consumption on our cars, even though it is happening to many of us.

I have had to top off twice in 4 months and I have less than 2, 500 miles on a car that gets driven once or twice a week.... :
