Few questions about 640D GC
Hi there,
I am new to the F06 world, having taken delivery of a used 640D GC M-Sport three days ago. So far I am loving the car and the toys in it. Whilst it is big the surround/birds eye view helps big time! I have a few things that I've noticed and am hoping someone can shed light on it... First one is turbo noise. I can hear the turbos, like a whistle type from the car on low revs. Is this normal? I did hear another two driving past and they did the same, but just wanted to be certain? Second one is the handling of the car is taking me some getting used to (coming from a 3 Series e92). I have however noticed a clicking / metallic noise coming from either the front or rear wheel area when driving over certain uneven surfaces. Anyone had this issue before? Thanks |

Hi mate
My 640d turbo's don't make a sound and that sounds like it could be a joint or bush of some sort? Did you buy it from Bmw or private etc?

Hi mate,
Thanks for the reply. It is indeed a BMW AUC. I have been listening to the turbo more and think its the turbo noise when the revs drop. I've found a video on YouTube of a 640d. 0.41-0.48 seconds you can hear it when the revs drop. Mine makes the same noise. Thats what I was thinking, guess i'll have to get it booked in as its still got the balance of the new car/approved used car BMW warranty. Nevertheless loving it so far, a cracking car! |

Thanks for the replies. Indeed it is only on low revs or 'parking speed'. Here in London It can be start/stop, which is where I here it most.
On normal driving its definetely silent - no noises. |

I've had 2 6 GCs and a coupe and heard it on all. You need the stereo off and it only does it when you drop down heavily and then accelerate pretty hard There's a dual carriage way near me, I sometimes need to brake from 50 or so and then Accelerate up from 10.... That's really the only place I hear it. But as I do that road everyday I have noticed it only happens at those lights, otherwise I never hear it |

Thanks for the replies all and thanks for the welcomes
I must say, its with the window down when you can hear it. You can also hear it in the background when idling too (cold start). I do hear it more at parking speed and say coming out of a driveaway or similar. |

Hmm, it did disappear indeed.
So basically the low speed turbo has been replaced under warranty and it is now quiet. The technician could clearly hear the whistle and didn't quibble at all. Apart from a funny smell from the engine bay (hopefully should go soon) it is now perfect - so far so good! They couldn't find the clicking/clunking so will have to monitor that further. |

Dealer was really good about it actually, as BMW do like to say if it is working its 'normal' irrespectable of noise. I'd recommend requesting a test drive to 'demonstrate' it to the technician. Otherwise it may come back as within tolerance. |

I had my turbo replaced too. Nearly both funny enough, but managed to get the high pressure one swopped over with all the bits and bobs. All under warrenty

Thats great news. So a few weeks down the line, it does still make a bit of noise but not as loud as the original. I do think they are noisy a bit, but more so when they have warmed up. Does yours still do it?

How is everyones turbos? Are they still silent or do they make a little noise now, after 'bedding' in?
I can hear mine again a bit but dealer reckons its normal now. I think so too but just checking. The 640d turbos are a bit noisy is what the master tech from two different dealers told me. |
