New member, new to BMW- first purchase questions please help :)

Hey all I am thinking about buying a 2010 M6 and I have been researching all over and have a few questions which i hope someone one assist in:

1) lots of rock chips on the hood and few scratches on door panel, would a respray of hood make it look decent and fix most rockchips if they agreed to it? Its black saaphire color

2) BMW dealership uses 3rd party to extend the existing manufacture warranty which expires in a few months. Aprox. 5200 for 4 years full coverage EXCEPT "Clutch Assembly" and "Friction Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate"....does this mean it wont cover anything to do with the clutch at all, including the pump?

3) I hear lots of horror stories about the SMG transmission failing on earlier models, are there lots of issues on the 2010 model for the SMG transmission that are very costly??? on the 2010 BMW M6 are there any other major issues I should be aware of or that should be checked out before buying?

4) would you guys recommend that $5200 for 4 yrs warranty given its a 2010 model? remember also doesnt look like they cover clutch components but not sure if that also includes the clutch sensors or SMG pump?

Thank you very much for anyones thoughts on these questions, i am brand new to bmws it would be my first one

This is the later M6 forum, you may not get much help here.

1) lots of rock chips on the hood and few scratches on door panel, would a respray of hood make it look decent and fix most rockchips if they agreed to it? Its black saaphire color

From my experience, its hard to blend well, depends on the paint and skill of body shop. May not exactly match.

Warranty only as good as the company. Its sounds like an exclusionary policy for the smg system, so why bother at that price.

3) I hear lots of horror stories about the SMG transmission failing on earlier models, are there lots of issues on the 2010 model for the SMG transmission that are very costly??? on the 2010 BMW M6 are there any other major issues I should be aware of or that should be checked out before buying?

Mileage, service history, oil changes etc. This is an expensive car to maintain, do you have the budget?

4) would you guys recommend that $5200 for 4 yrs warranty given its a 2010 model? remember also doesnt look like they cover clutch components but not sure if that also includes the clutch sensors or SMG pump?

well I am not sure if the smg pump or the sensors is part of the "clutch assembly" or if its part of the transmission that may be covered....Ill have to find that out....the 2010 model I don't see many posts about people complaining about the pump and sensors so did they fix that problem and its just the clutch itself I have to worry about? The flywheel shows as being covered on the transmission so its just the clutch itself id have to pay for???

do you think on a 2010 model year it is worth the 5300 for 3 years given the info above as to what it includes??? was 2010 a problematic year?

if I wait until after the bmw warranty is up they say the price will go up from 5300

Had an E63 M6 for nearly 5 years before my F13. It was perhaps my favorite BMW I've owned but it was also the most costly and least reliable. The transmission will give you more headaches than you can imagine, but the scariest part is the propensity of the engine to fail between 80k-100k miles because of an issue with the rod bearings. My advice to anyone considering this generation M6 is to get one with as low miles as possible and definitely try to find a warranty that will give you some peace of mind knowing that you WILL have to deal with transmission and engine issues at some point with that car.

my 2007 M6 cab had 52,000 km and I was told that I would need two new camshafts nearing 55,000 km or so ... the lifters are not hydrolic and you must ensure the engine is warm and only rev to the MAXIMUM RED Line ... this is the outer RPM Dial, and it moves up the dial as the engine heats up allowing you to rev even higher. My dealer warned me that if we did not do it at an adequate time, there is a risk of fracture of the camshafts ... and if the car was abused this is also a concern as you may or may not know of the camshaft state.

I was told the job runs about $15,000 canadian or so and they recommended doing the water pump at the same time. My warranty was done so I changed to the 2016 M6 ... still miss the V10 Grawl ... but the cost of the maintenance was a big number and I also needed new rubber and the self leveling headlights every so often had an error message ...

I have found out via family member who purchased my car (work together they do) ... gave them the warning and detailed hx on the service and service recommendation.

Hope this helps!

Good LUCK, it was a crazy car and what an engine!

thanks for the replies, do you think these issues also apply to the most reliable year of the E63 (2010). What can I do about the rod bearing issue? its got about 55000 miles on it right now

If I were to purchase a used car, I would try to find out complete vehicle history from previous owners or a shop that has performed maintenance on that particular car could possibly have some insight on it. If you know the person has had regular maintenance performed and how well they have taken care of it is the deciding factor and how much your willing to put into it. More than likely you will be paying some cash for vehicles that have more than 50k miles because parts just don't last forever ! In the long run it might be best to find a used BMW with only 10k-20k that someone is just tired of that has taken good care of.

Base from experience guys I would find an 07-10 M6 with very low mileage as possible as to these engines are very sensitive, very costly, and I would say sometimes, not reliable. I would still get more research and second opinion from owners too!
