Oil consumption
My recently purchased 650i cabrio MY13 has very big oil consumption.
I have only done 3000km and I already have added 2 litres of Oil. I know that the brake-in-period is over but I still drive it very gently |

I added a quart at the 5200 mile mark. From what I'm seeing, most people are having to add a quart somewhere between 4000 and 5500 miles, at least for the 2012 TT V8 in the 650i/650xi.
It's pretty common - no need to be concerned.

I'm little concerned...
Are you saying that all 2012 build vehicles use oil, and some 2013?
Is it just the 650i CV or the 640i and how about the M6? and do we have any ideas what causes it? My Freind's 2000 M5 used much oil due to elliptical oil rings, but that was changed on the 2001 models...

I'm pretty engine illiterate - hopefully someone else can step in and help out.

I've put 2 quarts in, about 3K miles apart. Still (relatively) new engine, lots of cylinders, two turbos, and a lead foot, all together means I'm keeping an eye on it because it's annoying, but not, at this point, troublesome.
Some engines just go through oil- Porsches are well known for it. |

I posted a thread about this same topic on the Fest and Southern22 is correct most people need a quart around 5k but since my Dealer topped my engine off for free thats fine with me. If thats the worst issue with these Bi-turbos V8 I can live with it.

+1. Small price to pay for such a beastly engine. A quart of BMW brand oil was something like $8.95 from my dealer, and I just had to pop the hood, untwist the cap, and pour in the entire container. I can live with the cost of a coffee and a muffin from SBUX every 5,000 miles to keep my engine happy

Our x5 5.0i also drank oil at regular 3000 mile intervals until about 10k miles. Currently have 25k miles and now I go about 6000-7500 miles before needing more oil. Dealer said its normal for the TTV8's to use quite bit of oil. I would only be concerned if you still need oil at less than 2500 miles intervals when you have around 10,000 miles.
