Tires - One Last Time

Okay everyone... I'm pulling the trigger. My run-flats are driving me crazy. I'm buying OEM M-Sport 20in wheels tomorrow and buying Mich PS AS/3 in 255/35/20 and 285/30/20 tires (which are bigger than the OEM's). Please tell me this will fit without problems and the ride and quietness will be better than my 19in M-Sport run-flats.

Please help reassure me before I drop the $$$.. This won't be a cheap deal. Thanks.

Anything will be better than RFT. But others said the 19's ride better than the 20's. I didn't feel much of a difference. 20's should be good with non-RFT's.

I went with Hankook R-S3 285/35/20 rears, I like that it eliminated the gap between the quarter and the tire. I also increased the front to a 245/40/20, did the same for the front. You will not have fitment issues at all, I just hated the fender gap after lowering and the larger sizes add more comfort and traction.

I personally thought the 19" RFTs rode great in my test drive (although that car had Adaptive Drive - which should not have made a difference...).

Anyway...
I went with the Conti DWS. They are a high perf all-season and my out the door price was about $1,050 (of course I already had the rims). My wife loves the way the car drives now - I'm still getting used to it being so much softer.

By going to a 285/35 tire you've effectively reduced torque to the ground by 5% as well as a 5% error in your speedometer. You are going about 5% faster than it reads. Of course given the built in 3mph error to the high side, you are probably on the money, at least around 60mph.

I have GPS and it is showing about 1mph over the speedo.. You have to remember that the OEM wheels are a 20x9 with a 275/30/20, now I am on a wider 20x10 with 285/35/20.. That extra inch of width on the rims stretches that tire, a 285/30/20 just didn't look right after the H&R drop. In regards to losing some torque, the Burger Tuning JB helps take care of all that! Hehe

Did not realize you went with a wider wheel and the JB. Looks like you got it all covered.

If I go with another 6 series, I'm definitely getting the Burger Tune. Have you had any issues with it?

I've got 20" with 10 wide with 285/30-20" fits perfect and way better than RFT. No mismatch on speed. Continental contact sport 5.

Yeah I have been modding cars for 16 years now, i cover those bases! You would not be disappointed in the slightest if you got the Burger tune! I have been working with Terry, the owner of Burger Tuning since he started out around 2007 and he is the best tuner I have ever worked with. His business ethics and customer service are the best in the business far as I'm concerned.

Looks great. Perhaps a bit too slammed for a luxury coupe, but I get it.

I understand why you went with the larger profile tires. I just wanted others to be aware that doing so is a significant change to diameter and therefore rolling distance.

Brazz: Moving from 275/30 to 285/30 only adds 6mm (less than 1/4") to overall diameter. This is within the difference of one manufacturer to the next, or even within the amount a tire wears over time. One shouldn't expect any issues.

Moving from 275/30 to 285/35 adds 1.4 inches to the diameter resulting in 4.26 in rolling distance per revolution. That is significant. That's why I pointed it out.

The sport 5 tires did good in some tests. Good on wet surface. And they do not make that much noise. And the price was good.

Thanks! It's usually not that low, it's leaning a little into the turn in the canyons. Here is a before and after, now it just sits perfect on top of the tires with no fender gaps.

Swapped out my RFT 20" M Series Rims & tires at the dealer..didn't even bring them home. Car is on 19" non RFT M Series Rims I already had on my F10 550i. Tires are Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and do great for winter weather here in Pacific NW. Will switch to my summer 20" in spring again.

On tire Rack.com you will find this, that tire has the highest speed rating, deepest tread, highest temp
rating of any other tire rating, ANY.

On an 08 e60 I drove the sht out of it never had a tire puncture, and rode smooth till the end, unlike the sht run flats. Of course I don't run tracks but most of us dont, this is the best tire IMO. 3 sets on m5, 2nd set recently on 6 series. My 6 series is smoother down the road than a new 6 off the lot. You'll never buy another tire.

Update

So, finally got rid of my 19in M-Sport run-flats and got the OEM M-Sport 20in wheels with the Michelin PS AS/3 in 255/35/20 and 285/30/20 tires. The ride is significantly better!!! Night and Day....

I still have my original OEM 19in M-sport wheels and Mich run-flats if anyone is interested.

This may be a strange request, but would you mind posting some close of pics of the Michelins on the 373M OEM wheels? I recently replaced my 19 OEM for 20 OEM also and have been seriously considering ditching the Dunlop RFTs as soon as I get my car shipped to California (may keep the 19s for long road trips, but don't have to be too concerned about seasonal tire changes).

The only problem I have is I'm anal about making sure my car "looks factory original" and I don't throw off the aesthetics by putting on tires that appear to wide for the wheels).

I too have finally switched to Michelin Pilot AS/3 (OEM sizes) on my OEM M Sport 20 inch wheels. The RFTs were fine when new, but after about 15,000 kms they got lumpy, noisy and harsh. I grew to hate them.

The Michelins are quiet, very smooth and as far as I can tell on my favourite curves and bends, just as grippy as the stiff Dunlop RFTs.

I'm sticking with winter RFTs on 18 inch wheels because I live in a somewhat remote village and I don't want to find myself with a flat on a frigid night in February!
