Fed up

Morning folks (happy new year to everyone).

I have a 2014 (14 plate) sliver 640d GC.
I LOVE THIS CAR.
I've had it coded.
Changed run flats to non run flats.
It's been remapped.
It's looks awesome.
Turns people's head.

BUT

I'm getting fed up feeling everything single bump when I'm driving (Live in the slough area).

I do a fair amount of driving due to work and my passion for golf and I get excited when I'm about to get into the car (owned it for 14months).
But every time I see a crack in the road I think "oh shit".

Is it just me or do other people think the same?

Is there anything I could do to make the drive not so bumpy?

Mine is on run flats still and the ride is fine and not to harsh. Have you checked the tyre pressures or possible issues with the suspension. Or i could just be the poor state of our roads in the uk.

I know how you feel, I am in Sheffield known as PPT hole city...i I spend all my day avoiding all holes had two new tires with bulges in.. I am on the derbyshire border and can tell as soon as I cross it...i worked check pressures as noticed a massive change on a f30 I had

You have to understand that the 5 and 6 series will have stiffer suspension in general. The stock struts are designed stiffer than for example a 7 series which has front springs and rear auto leveling air springs. Unless you want to run out and swap your car to a 7 series, you have a couple of more realistic options. First off, do you have 20's? If so, you can get tires with a higher aspect ratio. For example, run 245/40 front and 275/35 rear. You'll get much more cushion but your speedo will be off by ~3mph. This is what 7series uses. If you don't want to change the diameter of your wheels then I'd suggest going down to 19's. That'll give you more cushion but then you're trading off the looks of a larger wheel.

Best solution is to get rid of the Run Flats. Changed out mine and it is a night and day difference.

Tyre pressie is all ok.

Not to sure what I can say to BMW.
They will obviously say it's ok.

Need to find someone with the same car and go for a ride.

ive got 19's and often round west london. Having said that mine are on run flats at the moment and as I dont really drive the 6 much was looking to go for 20s.

dm me and we can meet up or pop down on saturday at the bmw london owners club meet (I hopefully will be there).

Does that mean you have 20" wheels right now? If so, there's your answer - best thing I did with my previous 640i was to switch from 20s to 18s with non-RFT. The improvement in ride, handling and noise level was amazing and I had no hesitation in ordering my current car with 18s. It might not look quite as 'cool' but the ride quality matters far more to me.

You should get a 5 or 7 series. Any 6 series no mater if is 640 or 650 or M6 has sporty character.
Changing the tires to non run flat will help but not that much because of the sporty and stiff suspension your car has. Trust me I was with F13 for 5 years and tried all of them from luxury package 650 to M sport 650 and finally M6.

It all depends on the suspension configuration. My previous F12 640i was factory standard and, coming from an F10 with AD, I was never happy with the ride but changing the 20" wheels to 18" and non-RFT made a significant difference.
I ordered my current 640i with AD which includes VDC and the difference is even more pronounced than it was on the F10. I've just completed a 2k mile trip and in Comfort+ on the motorway it was the smoothest ride I've ever experienced, plus having AD means I can tighten up the dampers and roll bars when I want a bit of fun on twisty country roads - best of both worlds.

AD is Adaptive Drive. VDC is Variable Damper Control. AD includes VDC but adds adjustable front and read roll bar coupling elements.
So, in Comfort+ the roll bars are virtually decoupled and the dampers are set to fully soft giving a very smooth ride but the trade-off is reduced body control in cornering. Next modes are Comfort, then Sport - the roll bars progressively stiffen up and the damper response sharpens to give a 'sporty' feel but it dramatically reduces body roll in fast cornering.
It's not a cheap option but it's extremely effective.
