Passenger Restraint System Reset
In my search for the pollen filters, I pulled off the side panel on the passenger side in which is the keyswitch for disabling the passenger airbag is fitted. I pulled off the plug and wire from the back of that switch to get the panel out of the way. Big mistake because when I plugged it back in, re-fitted the panel and turned the ignition on I get a "Passenger Restraint System Fault" message and the airbag icon on the dash.
How can I reset this other than taking it to a BMW stealer? Thanks Mark |

Well, to answer my own question, I had to use a local mobile mechanic with the correct tool to reset it. Took him about 10 minutes but cost me £40. I should have made sure the ignition was completely switched off before removing that airbag wire so a word of warning to everyone.

Because it is the SRS system...it is designed NOT to be a simple driveway reset procedure or easily bypassed since it deals with something that can kill you or your passengers if involved in an accident. The MRS/SRS system is serious business in that a faulty system could come back to the car manufacturer with serious law suits. So the warning system makes you jump through hoops to insure that the driver/owner knows that the system has faults...and they need to be addressed/fixed properly for safety of the car's occupants. FYI...anytime you come across a SRS/MRS connector (electrical) and its in the way and needs to be disconnected...ALWAYS disconnect the negative battery cable FIRST...then disconnect the SRS/MRS connector. Then prior to reconnecting the negative battery cable...RECONNECT the SRS/MRS connector...then hook the battery cable back up. This will prevent the system from seeing an SRS/MRS connector not "reporting"...thus you won't get an SRS/MRS warning light.

Thanks for the info. I'm just salty the full service guide on this forum mentions nothing about the airbag system and the old filters still looked good. Just bought the vehicle so I figured I'd change it anyways...

So I've been looking for a tool and saw that Carly was able to reset this.
Is BimmerCode able to do this as well? Might be worth the investment edit: Looking into ISTA+ as well BimmerCode is NOT able to read/reset codes BimmerLink is able to. Last edited by itzjoker; 05-08-2020 at 03:13 PM.. |

BimmerLink was able to clear my codes and reset this light. Some other added perks are being able to control exhaust flap. Very easy to use and worth the small investment! ($35 app, $25 for bluetooth obd2 adapter)
