Winter Tire Sizes

Getting to be that time of year where I'm looking to buy a set of winter wheels/tires for my '13 GC MSport. Looking at the 19" Avant Garde M510 Silver Concave Wheels and leaning towards the Conti DWS/DWS06. Currently have the 20" 373M's but looking for a smaller winter A/S tire thus the smaller wheel.

Question I have is I want to go with tires sizes that give me as much aspect ratio as I can get without rubbing to help with the crappy NE roads-especially during winter months-so looking to go larger than the standard for 245/40 all around or 275/35&245/40 staggered.

Thanks.

I think 245/40 is the highest sidewall you can get for 19 with 245 DWS's..some other brands may have 245/45.. I would not go wider to get a higher sidewall..wider would be worse for winter traction. The 255/55/19 would be too wide in my opinion in snow ...but if you will drive only when snow is shoveled.. you will have a nice cushion with 255/55

I am gonna do a square set up of 245/40 with blizzaks on my 19 style 367's..I would rather have real snows on the narrowest profile with RWD.

Agreed, I want to keep the 245 width but go as high as I can on the sidewall. If 245/40 is as high as I can go so be it. Don't want to go wider as that will defeat the purpose of going to an A/S tire to begin with. I've got X-drive so that should help out a ton as well.
For you, being you are RWD, 245/40 plus the Blizzak snows make sense.

Thanks for the reply.

Actually I checked TireRack. The Contis come 40/45/50 in the 19's so need to see if I can figure out the highest I can without causing issues.

I just noticed now you are xi.. profile wont matter as long as you stick with a square set-up
which you should for winter. Your only concern would be upping the side profile without getting too wide a tire. Now if you want to go staggered the rolling diameter of the front and rear wheels needs to be within 1% of each other to prevent damage.

Use any online tire aspect ratio calculator and plug in the size you are want..dont exceed 1% between the front axles and you will be fine.

Thanks

Does anybody have experience with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 tires? My tire dealer recommended them today for winters. 255/35 20s all around. I've used Dunlop Wintersports and Sottozeros on other cars, but now I need snows for my M6 GC. Online reviews suggest the Hakkas are supergrippy on snow and ice, probably lose some cornering performance against some other performance winter tires.

mcho3, I've heard and read good things on various forums about the Blizzaks. I'm in CT so snow isn't my top priority. More concerned about cold and wet so going for an A/S tire. Not sure how it is in WA where you are but if you have more cold and wet vs. snow you may want to consider an A/S tire vs. a snow tire as well.

Thanks zanye08 for catching that. Sorry mcho3, M6 will require 20" wheels to clear the Calipers.

I had Haka R2 on my 640i GC. To soft tires. I would go for Michelin.
