I took the trim off and removed the bottom assembly from behind and levered off the old button from the back.

Great little mod! Thanks OP! I had to cut my red button as the OEM has square cuts at the bottom and the one I got from Amazon did not have the cuts. Took an extra 5 minutes.

It will be if you ever get a new M5, or probably M8 once that comes out. The button in the new model is red.

I know, but it just doesn't look right and out of place. I noticed the new M5 now has red paddles for the M modes now.

I wish they'll revert back to the old M days of more classly understated interiors and stop trying to look like AMG.

That doesn't make much sense to me considering the post above has red seats, our M steering wheels have red stitching, the M logo has a red line, etc.

what? The M tri-color logo and stitching is a classic. Red seats...yeah, I wouldn't buy a car with one.

What I meant is that all M cars have little red accents here and there so the red button fits nicely in there. I like me some red seats, it's all preference in the end.

You just have to pull off the trim carefully, it pops out. Then unplug the connectors and remove 3 screws to remove the button assembly. There's two prongs holding the button into the housing, use small tools to release it and then pop in the new one and put it back together. I had to cut slots into my button to match the slots on the OEM button but some of them might come already cut.
