640d remapped mpg and a little fun

Hi guys this weekend I took my car from Kent to Leamington Spa with a round trip of around 350 miles.

It averaged 40mpg over the whole journey which involved lots of varied roads and speeds and traffic jams etc which I thought wasn't to bad.

On the way there a e92 m3 thought he would try and show me up with lots of smiling faces as he thought he would leave me behind but he wasn't smiling so much when the Diesel held its own and at some points actually had the edge but overall about the same which pleased me but obviously didn't please him.

Coming back a Golf R with some young lads thought he'd show my big Diesel how quick his car was within speeds that would keep your license and immediately my car had the edge and kept the edge and his friends were giving the thumbs up but the driver seemed confused how a big diesel could have the edge over his fast hot hatch.

Yet again I was very impressed for a big car to still be achieving pretty good mpg while contending with pretty fast cars. Good bit of fun and safely done while there were clear roads :-)

Looking forward to our road trip to the Algarve in July to really see how the car gets on and how many miles it will achieve on a full tank while plodding.

Must of really shocked the m3 driver with the midrange thump lol but wouldn't know the outcome over a full race but we have got Santa pod in June so should see then as my friend is bringing his e92 m3 so should be interesting :-)

Haha sounds like you had a good laugh

Surely not the new turbo golf r ?? As they are immensely quicker than our cars, my mates got one and smashes me everytime... And not by a little ..... By a lot

Most definitely a new golf R 15 plate. Mine is remapped so is about 70-80bhp up and twice the torque probably helps. Mine had the edge for the 3 short times he tried but no doubt if his was remapped it would be the other way round I guess.

Just a few numbers I recorded when I did some testing.
0-60 4.5-4.7 secs 0-100mph 10.2 secs but when you are rolling around 50mph the midrange is very strong and it would take a very fast car to embarrass it around them speeds. Both the m3 & golf I had a bit of fun with wasn't like 0-100 races they were like 40mph onwards where the 640d is pretty strong.
I really recommend a Remap as the 40d comes alive

Remapping improves the power delivery, throttle response, etc
Here is my dyno graph.
It's similar to what a jb4 does I think.

I have a 650i GC with the racechip installed.

Would it be pointless to remap or would it be better to remap and remove the chip, or can I still run the chip when I remap?

A remap is often considered better than a chip as they custom remap the car and quite often will run better and put the power down better than a generic chip.

Have you had your 650 on the dyno? If so did you get it dyno'd before and after you had the race chip fitted?

I haven't had my car on the dyno before or even after, I was going to do it when I get some time to.

Just had a quick look based on standard specs the official times v R. 640d is 5.4, the R is 4.7 - 4.9, either way you put it more than half a second slower. In regards to the M3 it is more than 0.5 second quicker than the golf or a second faster than the big 6. The main problem for the M3 really is the midrange of the 640 diesel and having to rev out the M3 (whilst nice, means it could loose ground in the wrong circumstances).

In fairness to the big 6 though she is 500 kg heavier than the golf, so the result is actually fairly good IMO. Plus to be honest I would prefer to be in the 6 than a golf....

It is like being at work and having to "explain" why you bought a golf (yes to petrolheads they know it will be quick, but to many it is just a slightly fancy golf), with the 6 I have found absolutely no need to explain it as it is special in it's own right (away from the the usual (dare I say mundane?) rows of 1',3's and 5's, maybe the odd 4 series).

With regards to the weight difference between my 640d coupe and the golf R it's actually 215kg difference from Automobile catalog.

The Golf R dsg is 296bhp @199bhp per tonne 0-60mph 4.9secs 0-62mph 5.2secs 0-100mph 13.6secs but read lots have been timed around 12secs?

Remapped 640d coupe approx 380bhp @224bhp per tonne 0-60mph 4.6secs 0-62mph 4.8 0-100mph 10.3secs

Standard 640d coupe 313bhp @184bhp per tonne 0-62mph 5.3. 0-100mph 12.9secs.

With the m3 midrange the 640d had the advantage for sure but not a great deal in it but a out & out race I'm sure the m3 would be faster but for speed limited roads the Diesel has more usable power when needed imo.

I based my weight on the GC so a little bit more weight going on.

The final bit about the 640 is so true for usable day to day performance the mid range on the 640 is very good.

It shaved off .6-.7 seconds on the 640d.

The hp increase is different on each car or is it the same? I would really like to see the numbers on the 650xi.
