Fitting the M-Performance Carbon Fibre shifter trim

Having looked for an install guide for the M-Performance shifter trim and failed, I thought I'd write up my experience.

First, the stock shifter

and the parts that come in the kit P/N 61 31 2 343 709

The part is the same for left and right hand drive and common to the F06, F12, F13 and F10.

The top plaque is a push fit and is also stuck on with double sided tape. I used a pair of plastic trim removal tools to pry it off. If you do it very carefully and slowly then you can re-use it, but a replacement is supplied so it's not the end of the world if you tear the tape or the glue comes off on the wrong part.

Removing the top gives access to a small Torx screw which is at the bottom of a plastic part containing diffusers for the LEDs

Once the Torx screw is removed the trim can be lifted off, it will probably come with the LED module and diffuser module. Gently remove the LED module from the back and the diffuser comes out of the front.

Place the LED module back on the shifter, it locates in a small lug at the bottom.

Put the new trim in place and re-insert the diffuser module, replace the Torx screw (a spare is supplied, no idea why really!) and stick the top plaque back on.

Job done, total time including faffing about and taking the photos, about 5 minutes.

It's a very good match with the rest of the trim as you'd expect. Even the angle of the weave is the same.

The material and finish of the stock part looks very similar to the gear knobs on the early E39 M5's, plastic with a silvered coating. Those gear knobs suffered from the silvering coming off, I suspect that the DCT shift knob would suffer the same problem although it's not used as much as the manual gear lever. Hopefully the Carbon Fibre trim should be much more durable as well as looking good.

List price is £177.50 +VAT, I paid £157.98 +VAT. Not cheap, but then you can sort of expect that for these cars!

Great job Richard! I might have to order that and then drive up to yours for a fitting in exchange for a beer or two! Looks great! How many miles now?

Just shy of 2K miles now, probably do nearly another 2K in the next 2 weeks by which time it will be officially run in!

I would proceed with caution here. I read that the plastic plaque doesn't sit as flush with the carbon piece as it does with the stock piece. There is a transition as oppose to being smooth. Sure enough - just installed mine and that is exactly the case. I'm gonna give it awhile and see if I can get used to it. It does look nice.

The radius on the Carbon Fibre piece on the edge that goes against the plaque is slightly larger than the stock piece, I'd guess this is just a characteristic of CF. There is a fractionally more noticeable transition between the two pieces, but to me it's not objectionable in any way, it does not leave a sharp edge for example.

This is why I have not done this on my car yet. I have my hand on the shifter a lot and if there is a noticeable transition it's going to bug me. I wish they would fix/change this. You can be very precise with carbon fiber so that can't be the reason. I find it odd that an OEM part like this doesn't fit perfectly. My OEM carbon fiber mirror caps (for example) fit absolutely perfect.

Oh well... I will sit tight until I hear people reporting it fits like a glove (might not ever happen lol).

Warranted update. As above, there is a transition. **BUT** I quite honestly prefer this to the stock feel. I know it sounds odd but the offset is no less pleasant to feel and actually looks quite sharp. Best cosmetic mod I've done. Lemons -> lemonade!
