AWD M6

What's the best guess for time required to produce an AWD option for the otherwise near perfect M6??

The earliest is probably 2019, but we don't know if it will ever really happen.

Hopefully never... at least for M6 Coupe and Convertible.

I don't really think that the M division looks highly upon AWD or the BMW xDrive.

Why would that be? xDrive is solid as a rock and it's pretty common knowledge that all wheel drive offers superior handling over almost all real world driving conditions.

Call me old fashioned (or a cave man if you like) I converted the first Gallardo from AWD to RWD in 04 (car went from handled like a pickup truck to amazing even the folks at Lamborghini were impressed with it) converted both of my 911 tt to RWD and think all AWD sports cars should be melted down and used to make housing for the homeless. AWD is fine in SUV's and Sedan's but it's only purpose in a sports car is to make people who cant really drive that well feel comfortable. Though I am not your normal owner (not many people take apart brand new cars and rebuild them), but I learned to drive on a three on a tree without all the electronics gizmos, I am no fan of traction control (I usually disable it permanently when possible). I am getting old now but for over 40 years I have been taking things apart and designing things that make them better, or at least better for me.

OK, you're old fashioned. It's hard to dispute the performance and handling of the R8, isn't it? It's an amazing drive, not that the M6 is the same car at all, but.....to have the option in such a car, whether or not you track it, would be great for those who are reluctant to add an 8th car to the fleet just because you can't drive the thing safely in winter (already have two summer only garage hounds)

+1
I did test drive the Huracan 2 weeks ago and I understand what you are talking about...

Because you want to drive the car in winter, doesn't mean M division has to put AWD on M6.... It's like I want to go off road with 911 and complain why this car is not able to do that.... Porsche never design 911 for off road or design Cayenne to go to track and beat 911...
I think you need to test drive R8 and McLaren back to back to feel the real "amazing drive" ...
AWD M6 will be a car like RS7 which is completely under-steer and turns like a bus...
On the other hand, there are many different reasons why RWD has superiority over AWD drive. Maybe it's not important for you but for many people is important since "how fast a car is and how fast a car can accelerate" to me means "performance"... and IMO if these stuff are not important for some people, then M6 is not a right choice for those people. 650 xDrive or Alpina B6 must be better choices...

M6 CP is able to beat GTR, R8 V10+ in straight line and keep up with 911TTS... because is RWD and has a lot less drivetrain loss while all of them have better power/weight ratio compare to M6... have you ever seen this post:
http://www.6post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=911274

Speaking about handling and track time, just for a comparison, on Laguna Seca racetrack, the 3600 lb AWD R8 V10+ is about 2 second faster than 4200 lb RWD M6 (which is a lot longer than R8) and 4 second slower than 3200 lb RWD McLaren MP4 with the same weight distribution (42/58) and size; However MP4 is slightly more powerful.

Okay so I also have owned over 425 cars in the last 25 years, many Ferrari's (until the 458 when they only offered paddle shifting crap), my 430 coupe being my favorite. The R8 is one car that I have never liked (and it looks hideous so I would not even want to convert it to RWD) so my sports cars are stored in the winter and I go between the Panamera 4S, Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit (best dawn SUV I have ever owned and I have pretty much owned them all), and for fun my modified Abarth. Both my 650 coupe and my girlfriends 650 convertible are RWD so when winter comes they will both be put to bed. Besides when the road temps go below 40 Summer performance tires are not exactly at their best (they can become like ice skates and without traction controls scary) so I prefer to drive them when they are. Like I said I'm old and I still mess with cars but five years ago to prove I could (I never made it past the 8th grade and was recently diagnosed as the poster boy for Aspergers which explains a lot about me) I began writing novels, to occupy my mind. My third on came out last month. Like M6 (my last 6 series was a 07 M6) says if you want AWD there are many choices, I think BMW feels from a pure driving standpoint the M6 is exactly the way it should be though if they are going to change anything I would say the girl could loose 500lbs. She would be a much better dancer if she did.

Alright, already

OK, I give up, cry uncle and will not ever bring this up again. The M6 will remain pure RWD forever or at least while you guys are alive....

I have read that most of the ones making over 1000hp have been converted to RWD. The trans in that car in stock form has been a $15-20k burden on everyone I know who's owned one.

This gives a little explanation about how the Nissan GT-R's AWD system works. Very much like BMW's xDrive:
http://www.autoevolution.com/news/ni...ned-35006.html

And here's a little bit of info about how the 2016 Alpina B6 with xDrive bests the M6 with a combination of more power, torque and traction than the M6.

But if you put the alpina on the track vs the m6, the alpina will probably get killed.

I think you are mixing two different concepts.
Alpina B6 is most likely a luxury car with sport performance while M6 (compare to B6) is sport car with luxury options. Having said that 400lb difference (AWD B6 GC vs M6 Coupe) is what defines the performance especially when we are talking about agility. I know B6 GC probably jump off the line faster than M6 up to 1/8 mile (because of AWD) but that's all it can do. Every other battle has only one winner... M6.
I don't think B6 can even go to track or if can then you will expect something like this

I have driven both the M6 and the B6. I Just put 1500 miles on a 2016 B6 driving the Autobahn and the Alpine roads of Germany and France. In my opinion, the B6 has considerably more power, torque and handles better on the road than the M6. While the B6 may be a little heavier (it adds 200lbs not 500 lbs) the weight is low to the ground and the car is simply faster in all regards. On the Autobahn the added power and torque of the B6 over the M6 is obvious. It just pulls stronger than the M6. The xDrive is particularly amazing on uphill curves when applying power. There's really no comparison.

About the only situations where I would choose an M6 over a B6 would be drifting, spinning donuts or burnouts.

Glad you tested both and have experience.
As far as the weight difference, I relied on BMW NA numbers and as I mentioned I compared B6 GC with M6 Coupe:

B6 GC: 4780 lb
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx

M6 Coupe: 4250 lb
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx

Even M6 GC is 4430 lb (350lb lighter than B6)

It sounds like you're nut hugging the B6, and have zero real world knowledge of cars, engineering, mechanics, performance, etc. pardon my French.. You do understand that factual numbers speak for themselves right? Unless you make your own reality out of B.S. and hey some people do, I've seen it all. But the bottom line is that the M6 is more powerful, weighs less, handles better than the B6, costs more, and is more prestige of a car. Put the Alpina on a dyno and see what you get, I think you'll be taken back a bit by the fact that when Alpina tells you 600hp, and BMW says 560hp, one of those two stretch out that engine HP number just a tad. Add that to the extra weight of the B6 over the M and you have a 650i with upgraded turbos under warranty for $115k. ///
