Production timeline for new 6 series and X3 revealed. 6-cyl and AWD 6-series coming.

Today I got the monthly production bulletin from BMW. Usually nothing very exciting in there. I was scrolling down and found the production timeline for the new 6 series and X3 though.

MY 2012:

March 2011 - 650cv
July 2011 - 650cp
September 2011 - 640cp/cv
September 2011 - 650xi cp/cv

MY 2011:
December 2010 - X3 xDr28i
December 2010 - X3 xDr35i

Very interesting to bring out a 6 cylinder version of the 6 series, I think it's a good idea. There are some people (probably none on this board) who would like to have a GT car like the 6-series without needing a V8. Also an AWD version, touche' Audi!!!!

A 300-hp X3, also a great addition to the line-up.

There was also production dates for the AWD 5er-GT, but does anyone REALLY care about that???

Thanks a lot, that's huge! It confirms that the convertible comes first!

Nice find! Both the 6 and 8 will be turbos I assume. I'm a big supporter of advancements in turbo technology, especially with the I6, but will there be ANY NA BMWs left?

It will be sad not to see larger NA motors in production. I for one love my V8! But, I can't wait till December to get my winter commuter car! X3 xDr35i!

Actually, I would like a 6 Series with a six-cylinder. At 315hp, the 640i would be a classy GT cruiser without hopefully breaking the bank.

Interesting that they still use the "650xi" naming convention instead of "650i xDrive" or whatever they use for the 3/5 series...

Thanks for the info.
If you don't expand the brand, you will not have a brand to worry about. You can also thank future regulations for this also.

6 cylinder 6s have been around for a while! in Kuwait, there's always been 630i (3.0 l I6), 640i (4.2 l V8) and 650i (4.8 l V8). I'm sure its the same in Europe etc.

The X3 35i is not a big surprise, but I am a bit surpised to see they chose 28i designation for the N52 powered X3 rather than the 30i designation as found on the Z4. It leaves open the possibility that they will use the ~240hp N52 instead of ~260hp version. I realize, though, that the X1 has the higher output version even though it is called "28i", so nothing is certain yet.

True enough ALPINE, but as your list reveals, only the N52 is left (in the North America, anyway) for non-M vehicles. However, we all know that the turbo 4-banger is coming next year (highly rumored to go to the X1 first) and with a predicted output in the mid-200hp range, the writing is on the wall for the N52. In addition, the S65 will be the only NA M engine left after the M6 is gone. I am actually somewhat curious to see how fast the new turbo-4 replaces the N52 throughout the lineup. If BMW is aggressive about it, an S65 powered E92 or E93 (E90 will be gone) M3 could be the final naturally aspirated BMW off the assembly line for the forseeable future, well at least for North American production anyway. It also depends of course on the timing of the F2x 1 series (since they almost surely won't bother with the turbo 4 for the soon-to-be-replaces E8x 1 series).

Either way though the end of an era is upon us. Farewell to the naturally aspirated BMW.

Wasn't the 2010 X5 xDrive30i replaced with the N55 equipped 2011 xDrive35i ?

Normally aspirated engines will be a thing of the past in the next few years. With the new fuel economy requirements, BMW needs to find a way to get higher MPG while maintaining performance. Dropping a couple of cylinders and adding a turbo allows them to keep the same power but achieve higher fuel mileage. The 4-cyl turbo will replace the normally aspirated 6-cyl, etc.

It's sad to see the legendary I6 go away, but its what BMW has to do in order to meet the requirements that have been set by the government.

Any chance there will be a diesel for the X3? I think that about a third of the X5's currently sold are diesels; the diesel just makes so much sense in an SUV-type vehicle . . . (not that they don't make sense in passenger cars, but they make even more sense for SUV's).

Yes, in North America. It may still be available elsewhere, however.
