tested 640D xDrive today

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Tested 640D xDrive today. I am in love with this beautiful car. The engine fits very well and has a beautiful sound. I have the same engine in my 535d xDrive, but there have bmw muffled sound. Engine sound is more aggressive in the 640D which suits the car well. The momentum and energy in huge quantities. This will be my next car in about 2 years. 0-100 km / h in 5.2 sec. compared with 5.5 in the 535d xDrive. 640D is firmer in suspension in g minor comfortable chairs but it is well for it to be sportier. I say this is the best Bmw I've driven.

Wow, Your test car seems to be fit with every possible option, inside and outside!

If the d had been on the market a year ago I would have tested it in a thorough comparison with the i. I would PROBABLY go for the petrol version anyway, but I am definitely not sure....
After I got the little F20 diesel I am even more impressed of what these oil burners are capable of.
Talking about test cars: My dealer promised me to be one ofte first to play with the GC!!

Awesome car.

I'm not sure how I feel about the xDrive badge on the trunk lid. I think I prefer it underneath the side indicators on the front fenders. I think it clutters the look of the trunk a little too much. I don't hate it, but I just think I prefer the old way better...

I do agree. Having these enormous license plates front and rear in addition is more than enough. So I always opt for "no badge". Besides it's easier to keep clean.

How is the space in the backseat? Can 4 adults travel in this car?

No, it's too crowded. that is why I bought the 535d xDrive because I have children, but in a couple of years is not the children with the car. Then I can have the 6-series. 640D xDrive is fantastic to drive.

What about this video (at 1:22), from BMW I guess

Isn't it supposed to show that 4 adults fit in this car?

The rear seats are more of s rear shelf, albeit nicely trimmed, that provides an insurance rebate compared to a 2-seater. BMW can say they lengthened this car for the sake of rear leg room all day long, but people with legs will find it very difficult to sit there. There is roughly one inch of space between the setback of my seat and the rear bottom cushion. I can maybe fit one person behind the passenger seat, but that typically means both are squished, and visibility out of the side window is diminished because the passenger must sit do far forward.

I've seen this guy in other BMW promo videos. He is a relatively small guy, at least not in the 6'+ area.
I once tested the rear seats "scientifically":
I am 6' (182 cm). Behind me it is relatively comfortable (but not spacious) for a guy 5'3" (160 cm).
If the driver is 5'6 (170cm), it is ok for a same size guy behind.
For longer journeys the passengers can only be children, if you accept their footprints on the seatbacks

I wonder where the cabin room has gone in 6er compared to 5 series F10. They are almost equal in length, both have long hood, yet 6er has much smaller trunk and much smaller rear leg room.

The hood of the 6er is significantly longer, the windscreen is less steep. These two features put the drivers seat far back. In addition the rear window is also less steep, moving the rear seat closer to the front seats.

I haven't looked in the trunk of a 5er, but the 6er's trunk is pretty respectable for this type of car. It is extremely deep, so I'd imagine that took up some of the legroom. The front seats also have as much legroom as any car on the market. I'm 6' 4", and I don't even have the seat back as far as it will go.

Honestly, I'm okay with their choice for rear legroom. I'd rather have the space in the front and in the trunk. Yes, it is a pain from time to time when I'd like to have two or three passengers, but this is a very rare occasion.

+1. This car puts style and luxury above practicality --- I'm okay with that since I paid $10k more than a 7er for this uniqueness and style.

Since there's limited backseat leg room, then it also depends on how the driver seats in his front seat. Whether driver prefers the steering wheel to be all the way forward or pulls it of the dash backward slightly. I have seen drivers having the steering wheel all the way backward. When you push the steering wheel all the way forward towards the dash, how much space there's between the steering wheel and the top of the dash, an inch or more?

I'm interested in your opinion after you test drive the GC since you have a 640i and would want to know if there is a difference between the coupe and the GC.

I am invited to a BMW arrangement on Tuesday where they will present the GC to a closed group only. I don't think it will be possible to drive it that evening (they are bringing a show car into a restaurant), but probably they will set up an appointment for a test some other day

When my wife and I go out with another couple, there is definitely a bit of seating roulette going on to figure out how to position everyone. And, yes, sometimes I have to slide up a bit to accomodate a passenger.

It's definitely a 2-seater with room for kids in the back.
