F13 bmw m6 drive train malfuncction

Hey I have an f13 bmw m6 and I had a jb4 with an ams catless downpipe and the first couple of weeks of having it on there the car drove perfectly fine but after a couple of weeks everytime I gunned the car I would get a drive train malfunction and it would go into a limp mode. It would happen mainly around 3rd gear at 6000 rpm. I ended up taking off both the jb4 and downpipe and took it to bmw and there was a misfire from cylinder 6 so they changed my sparkplugs and coil and now it drives perfectly fine. I want to put the downpipe back on but I am scared that it will cause the drivetrain malfuntion. Would I be ok if I put just the downpipe back on without any tune?

JB4 tends to rattle hints around (little things)
Should look into an ECU tune.

Good luck!

Just cause you had a bad experience doesn't mean there aren't thousands of people running the JB4 without issue. I've blown a motor in a different car on a flash tune, nothing's perfect and you take a risk every time you modify anything.

I agree! Don't get me wrong, i had issues in both fronts.

The point is ECU tune is more reliable BUT risk warranty VS JB4 inconsistent but very little to no risk on warranty

BMS has great customer service, I would send it to them and see what they say. Are you running catless DP's? Also did you install the BCM and made sure it was done correctly?

This has been beat to death in multiple forums for all FI M cars.... the JB4s are limited and are a piggyback tune. There will always be issues. The only upside i see with the JB4 is that it can be removed and you can take your car back to the dealer and correct the error codes and what not. That and the fact that it only costs $1k.

Personally speaking, reliability is everything to me. A full ECU tune would resolve all these issues. Yes... you may void your warranty but from experience, a great relationship with your SA helps.

all turbo bmws will need some love on the fueling and ignition system at some point. tuning speeds up the need for this. i see this as a maintenance issue not as a jb4 vs ecu tune problem. You've been running the sparks/injectors/coil packs harder and now they need to be changed. misfires just come along with the territory.

jb4 seems to be wildly inconsistent on the s63tu imo.

i've been running the AA piggy and it has shown consistent 50-60whp gains on two cars, both without issue. I say two cars because my piggy is from a previous car. Both have dyno results. The only real downside is, if you choose to run a dp, the CEL can't be cleared.

Not gonna lie, I ran the AA piggy and it was smooth and reliable for almost 6-7k miles no issues

JB4 had on for about 1500 miles and it caused this issue

replaced injectors, coil packs, spark plugs, head gaskets, coolant flush, oil change, etc etc

Will put JB4 back on tomorrow

I was also missing 30-35% E85 per tank, which for sure caused some issues

Not going to do that anymore

it's quite a shame more folks dont run the AA piggy to be honest. It's just the right amount of kick the s63tu needs. Without the headache. Plug, and play.

I'm running it with a dp, and i have the CEL on. So that kinda blows. I guess at this point if my cel WASN'T on, my dash would look weird.

Plus +

With the Dinana Stage II and even before I finally went Dinan, with catless DP and akra Evo Full Titanium, my CEL would be only on occasionally, and less from what I recall with the Dinan Stage II (Car only been out once this year ... rain it wont stop princess no like rain ), and to be honest, I do not even notice it in the gauge cluster anymore be it on or off

For Some ... but I track the Car and the Dealer Group backs it and owns the track, and the warranty is key for me ... in for a penny, in for a pound
