Who here got a 640 coupe/GC and now feels they should have gotten 650

Seeing if I should consider a 640 coupe or GC. I like speed but I don't track.

I got the 640 because I drive a lot, but for a car this size, I would have gone with the 650 instead. I like the N55 motor, but IMO it doesn't suit the 6. I drove both before picking the 640, and even though the N63 weighs more than the N55, I liked the way it drove better.

I haven't drove a coupe, only the GC. I like the GC more though.

No regrets - 320hp is more than enough. May have had regret at the pumps if I got the 650....

I love the sound of my 650 which has the sport exhaust (rumor has it the 640s are all getting the sport exhaust now?).

That said, it is a ponderous beast. I have to suspect the 640 would handle much better. I really like my car (especially coming out of the 528xi loaner I just had), but I doubt I would be unhappy with a 640.

I have a 14 640iX GC. No regrets, the car is fast - I believe BMW quotes 0-60 at 5.2 and you get some weight savings by going with the smaller engine.

I drove both and for only 4 mpg less per gallon the V8 was the only way to go in my mind. Car is crazy fast!

Hey, everyone's different. When I was younger I didn't care what the car looked like but I wanted a killer engine (e.g. E39 M5, best car I've owned SO FAR). Now that I'm on my way out I want the car to look cool but don't care about the engine, hence my 2015 640ix GC.

As far as the engine goes, it pulls really nicely but makes a racket. The transmission is going to have the same problems in either the 640 or 650, as is the electrical system. For me, the power is more than enough, but if you want monster pulling power or like want to be able to talk to someone while driving () then the 650 is better, IMO.

I just moved from a 2014 640xi GC to a 2015 650xi GC.

I originally wanted a 2015 640 because I was completely satisfied with the engine, but my dealer didn't have any in the production queue, but had 650's.

Now that I have the 650, I'm glad. The engine is by far superior and the pull through is amazingly easy for the 650 vs the 640. As nlk10010 mentioned, the 640 works much harder and at higher rpm's.

I hear the 650 m-sport exhaust more then I heard the 640 engine and blow off happening.

Chose the 640 because of the engine. 320hp is more than enough and the V8 is just too unreliable for my liking. The last thing I want is to have an oil leak on the way to Vegas. The 6 series is a beautiful car, go slower and let spectators witness it

I drove both and read a lot of the forums regarding the reviews. I selected the 640. The 650 has excellent power but I didn't want to have keep oil in the trunk or drive to BMW every 1200+/- miles for a top off. The 6 cylinder BMW engine is one of the best made (wins global engine awards). I chose the reliability versus the extra power. Plus the 640 is not slow. Happy with my choice.

Went with the 650ix GC. It is big but beautiful. Add a tune and exhaust and its just magic. Also exclusivity...haven't seen another one on the road at least since Sept when I got mine. One or two old model 6 series yes but no Gran Coupes and few new F model 6 series either. It does have a presence on the street that you can't deny.

I choose 640i because of reliability since I want to finish dental school without worrying too much about her. My last car was E60 N54 so no complain about power.

Agree with the general sentiment here. The 640i has plenty of power when you really need it. I put it in Sport+ and shift the transmission to DS, and don't feel the need for additional power.

Drove an M6 GC but decided to go for a brand new 640i GC in the end as I didn't want to track. Recently drove a 650i to see whether I made a mistake but didn't think there was a massive amount of difference in terms of power between the I6 and V8. The 640i sounds better too after modding the exhausts. No regrets in the end and loving my 640i, a truly beautiful car:

Define "Superior"

From a power standpoint, sure. I got a 640GC because the engine is far more reliable than the V8. I wanted to ensure that I'm driving MY car. Not a 320 loaner car. Price was not a consideration in the purchase of my car as the sticker on my 640 was 92k.

My 640GC was at BMW for two months because of the turbo/wastegate needed to be replaced, and many other times for weeks at a time. It was small issues but that doesn't mean the 650 is less reliable.
