Camera Questions

Hi everyone.

I am picking up my newly purchased 6 series at the end of this week which includes the surround view as one of the options. Im curious to know if its possible to activate just the cameras on the mirrors in order to view curbs around tight corners when moving forward?

Also, I have the front camera for high-beam assist, how easy would it be for BMW to activate Lane Departure Warning? Would it just be a simple code? I really only want the visual warning and don't mind whether my steering wheel lacks the servos for vibration.

thanks in advance

In response to your second question, I am only speculating, but it's an educated speculation, that this would be impossible. You cannot code the LDW without all the hardware in place. The system would fault. If your car isn't factory equipped with LDW, it doesn't have the switch, mirror light, servo (as you mentioned) and who knows what else. I think you're SOL.

Thanks for the reply

I should have been more clear, all I wanted was the Lane Departure Warning for crossing over road lines and not the Lane Change Warning (as I thought the mirror lights you're referring to were only blind spot warnings?). I have read that the steering wheel warning can be circumvented by disabling that function and the system can be kept always on to avoid the need for a button (but this was on an F10). Anyways, my steering wheel has the heating function, so wonder if it includes the servos :/

Sorry, I'm not sure what al these BMW acronyms mean, what is SOL?

Thanks

I still don't think it's possible. The wheel with servo is a different part number than wheel with heat, so you don't have it. SOL= ___ out of luck.

I have a 640d equipped with Surround View.

You can activate the cameras in the front fenders (just ahead of the wheels at the 2 o'clock position) to see around corners while merging into lanes. This view is not available at speed.

Likewise you can activate only the rear park-assist camera by itself. The other 2 cameras in the side mirror are for Surround View (top view) and cannot be activated individually.

Surround view appears to work at low speeds and parking speeds under 15mph

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info

it's too bad the cameras on the mirrors cant be activated on their own, would be helpful when negotiating tight roads. Range rovers can do this going forward and and call it curb view, hopefully BMW can release an update to do this sometime too

You have an excellent kerb view around tight corners from the top surround view. In fact it's better than the rangie.

Im sorry, think i may have misunderstood. So are you guys saying i can use the top surround view whilst slowly going forward? As it's not very likely I'll want to reverse up a tight windy car park to activate surround view xD

Because the sales person told me it would only activate in reverse.

Thanks in advance

You'll need to find a " coder " who can change that and so many other things to help you enjoy the car even more.

Thanks. Do you know if that'll void my warranty? Because if it does I'd rather not risk it :/

It activates automatically in reverse, however, you can activate it manually in forward. I use it going forward every time I pull into my garage, or any other space for that matter.

That sounds ideal I assuming you had it coded like the other person suggested, have you had any warranty issues? How do you go about activating it manually?

Thanks

I don't have any coding. This is standard on the car. You just hit the button on the center console.

the car tester guy said it was just to turn on/off pdc, but they tend to give wrong info

I can confirm that this is exactly how it works and no coding is required. Once activated, either automatically by selecting reverse, or manually on the centre console button, it remains active up to about 15mph.
