UK MY 2014 M Sport Gran Coupe - Black Sapphire / Ivory Review/Q&A
Picked this up
Only couple of photos - have a friend who is a photographer -when I visit him next month- will get proper photos done! Though if there is any specific photos/videos you want me to take in the meantime- I'm willing to do so! This is the 640d m Sport 6 GC - in Black Sapphire, with Ivory DAKOTA leather. Added 20", Full LEDs, Surround View Exterior - Really long car with a very aggressive nose- seeing it in real life has to done as photos dont really give you the impression this car makes - more sports than sedan. Tacky M badge stuck on the sides, hate it. Spoils the look of the side view a teeny bit. Apart from that - car exudes aggression. Interior - Dakota leather doesn't feel premium and soft as nappa - however it will def take a beating. Tan footwells seem a bit 1980s, but you get distracted by the huge amount of leather EVERYWHERE! With gorgeous contrast stitching. Plenty of real usable space for all 4 passengers. The screen is a masterpiece - best ICE I have seen with very quick movement (bar parking sensors picking up obstacles!). Road noise is very minimal! Engine- Lot of pull, throughout all gears (haven't red lined it obviously). Though there isn't a "bite" as such. Speed but doesn't illicit fear (for good or bad- your choice). This view may change once I put a few k on it. Doesn't seem to be thirsty at all Drive - Very smooth and stable. Though London roads do give it a smack every now and then. Not as bad as other low slung sports cars I have driven. Having the 20" doesn't help I suppose - though surprisingly not much road noise coming from the wheels either. Best small thing - The surround view is amazing, have played with similar in Audi, however this takes some beating. A must have if you live in a city! Worst small thing - No powered boot! - Closing the boot is annoying unless you want to get fingers all over it. Use it's handle and you need good strength, flexibility and reflexes to pull it down, move your hand out the way and then move your body out the way so you dont get sprayed by the rain water that pooled on top. So far nothing bad, hopefully will add a further review as I get to know the car. If you have any questions or requests please ask - Also if you are or know anyone that is a BMW coder in the London Area then please do tell me UPDATE

CONGRATULATIONS! What a fantastic car and spec - I look forward to more pictures and driving impressions in the weeks to come. The LED headlamps really make the car looks 'pop'. More aggressive!!
I smiled at your reference to the M bade on the side vents/fenders. This was always a big source of amusement for me on non-M cars sporting random 'M' badges and now i am getting the same. Might have it removed to preserve the clean elegant lines. Do you have the lovely retro-styled M-Sport steering wheel? I wonder if it has an nice thick rim? Too big? BMW's surround view is one of the best in the business. The one on the Jaguar XJ is an indetikit mess, not sure about the Audi. Not so sure about the Dunlop Sports GT Maxx tyres: very very average Enjoy your new drive!

Points arised.
If you get the Ivory Dakota interior - Get Black / Rubber mats NOW even before you pick one up. Comes out - but in real life usage - gets too dirty. Black mats compliment the colour scheme. Got full set for £35 The wheel is very thick rimmed with a strange material - I have not decided if I like the material or not but the thickness is brilliant. The wheel seems a lot nicer than the ones I have seen in reviews - will take picture soon. Maybe its a new one for MY2014. Exterior Mirrors, don't fold in on first lock (you have to hold down the lock button). You can set 2 separate timers for the heating to come on. iDrive has been excellent in the brief usage - DAB sounds fab. Don't mind the stop start at all - add in the Auto hill hold and it makes bumper to bumper traffic really easy. Switch off engine - Music continues playing. Open door and get out with key - Music continues playing, Close door and walk away - Music continues playing. Only when you lock it does it shut the car down fully. Minor - but makes me feel strange - I feel like I have not switched off the car. Does not remember if you have switched off AC on your last drive. AC is always on every time you start the car - minor gripe - some coding should sort that. Great first aid kit -along with Extinguisher - Hand crank able torch , kneeling mat, hi-vi vest, ponchos, Thick tyre changing gloves. Everything seems well built at the moment - no rattles. Very smooth and quiet car. Parking is such a breeze - perpendicular (supermarkets) and standard parallel parking is so easy. If you kerb these wheels - they will be YOUR fault! Hope this helps anyone - though I doubt it

The digital instrument display and LED adaptive headlamps are cost options in the UK and have to be specified (believe they come standard on M-SPort version in the US)
I added both to future-proof my car, the digital instrument display is an ambience thing (love it, hate it, the promise of future customisation options i suppose but pretty basic at the moment) - but the adaptive LED really makes both the functionality and design better in my opinion. Not quite worth £1650 more but then is the 6-series based on the 5-series architecture worth £20,000 more. You be the judge AR

Oh and the trunk is my biggest gripe. Not because I'm too posh to close it myself, but the way its sprung it often pops back up if you don't slam it hard enough.
And as a tip, try setting the split screen up to a Map. With grey map mode, RTTI on and distance to about 900 yards. This will essentially give you a monochrome map, with red/orange/green lines painted along each road indicating traffic conditions. A quick glance tells you conditions in your vicinity, allowing you to divert if there are any jams you should reroute around. Saves me from sitting in traffic regularly or conversely taking the longer way around unnecessarily because I'm expecting traffic somewhere. Last edited by Mentos; 09-20-2013 at 03:04 PM.. Before you bought the car did you test drive the 640i and the 650i? If so, could you describe any major differences? I'd appreciate the input. Thanks! |

No I have not test driven the other 2 - was always going to go for this engine due to its excellent reviews and stats. As requested by another user - I attach the view of the rear console vents

It's a smarter choice than automatically choosing the 650i because it has plenty of reserve power, very civilised and sporty at normal legal speeds. It doesn't have the low end torque I enjoy in a diesel but has nothing on the 650i except perhaps some of that growl. What it does have is 20% better economy and lower emissions and no compromise on power in everyday and motorway driving. I would pick the 640i over the 650i in a flash. If you want real sound too, go test drive a Maserati Ghibli. There, I said it.

Hang on a minute! Are you saying there is at least one other person in the world with a garage list mad enough to mix German precision engineering with Italian sporting passion however flawed? You have no idea how happy you just made me. Post pictures, dude.

Waahey Hello!
Nothing puts a smile on my face like this little number! Loved the M6 BMW left with me a few weeks ago (ended up ordering the 6er Gran Coupe) but it didn't come close to the honest passion and power on the Maser in its impeccably flawed Italian package - when I hear that sound, al transgressions are forgiven. Hehe.
