650ix with M6 rear diffuser and square exhaust tip removal
I will post a quick how-to with more pictures later this week for anyone that might want to do this because this was honestly a littler harder project than I had originally thought for a regular home garage do-it-yourself like me.
The first picture is the original diffuser with the square tips. The other pictures are the result Last edited by skilz4u2nv; 11-05-2016 at 11:08 AM.. |

nice. where did you get the diffuser? I was wondering how the 650 exhaust length would work with ///M diffuser. is that a 650 exhaust mounted with hangers in standard position or did you have to adjust?

That is the oem 650i exhaust.. no modification to the exhaust was needed other than cutting the square tips off. only problem is you cant just cut the two pipes out because you wont have enough space to clamp on the new tips. The vacuum flap assembly is too close.. only gives you a few inches to play with

The diffuser I got lucky and found someone who just so happened to be selling an Alpine White M6 diffuser. Every once in a while you will see a member on here sell theirs but you can get them on ebay or from bmw themselves. |

Looks great and I agree, I thought it was a Megan setup at first as well!
I would never be brave enough to attempt a DIY tip replacement like that as I've got 2 left hands Congrats...looks fantastic! You probably saved a ton of cash! |

This whole project cost me ~$80 for the round tips (can be cheaper or more expensive depending on the style and type of tip you would like to use), ~$5 for a can of black spray paint and a whole lot of nerves to take a reciprocating saw to a perfectly fine and functioning exhaust system. |

where did you get that M6 diffuser from? BMW?
so to do quad setup, i have to remove the mpackage black diffuser you had in the beggining and put that M6 diffuser right? and then maybe get another carbonfiber diffuser that goes underneath it? |

Correct, the black M-Sport lower diffuser has to be removed and either thrown away or sold to someone else (my experience has been that no one wants that piece so it found its way to the garbage bin) I was really lucky however, I found a nice guy not too far from me who just so happened to be selling an Alpine White M6 rear diffuser on craigslist for pretty cheap. He had upgraded to another carbon fiber piece I believe and he had no use for this one anymore. If you cant get that lucky they do sell them online.. I want to say that it is BMW part#51128052677. Only problem is that if you buy it online it will most likely only come primed and you will have to take it to a paint shop to get it color matched to your car, or do a completely different accent color. I would venture a guess that the piece online will cost you about $150-$250 depending on the website and you will spend another ~$150 to paint it. The plan is to get the other carbon fiber diffuser that goes underneath that like the one Vorsteiner sells but they are really expensive; north of $2000 just for that piece uninstalled. There are some China knockoffs on ebay for half the price but I am a little leery of those. |

Nice work OP, that looks great. Might have to add this mod to my next Spring's to-do list when the car comes back out of storage.

Just in case skilz doesn't respond soon (love to hear what he really went with as his car is fantastic), I have done a lot of research on this and I believe the 650 has 2.25" outs from the muffler and his appear to be the 3.5" wide outlets. So just find 2.25" inlet burned blue with 3.5" outlet. For this mod you will need 4 individual tips like that. I am looking to do a similar modification but with a muffler delete but I would like to have four inch wide outs.

640 has a single outlet from muffler I believe, though, so you will need to account for that. Not sure about 640 msport though?

Sorry guys, I have been MIA from the forums for a while.
I answered back all the PMs from my inbox (again sorry for the delay in responding) The tips I got from Amazon. They are the adjustable ones just in case I didn't like the blue flamed tips I could easily replace it and/or adjust them. I guess the proper way would have been to weld them on but so far after a few months they have stayed in place and held the spacing well. I would put a link on here to the exact tips I bought but i'm not sure that complies with 6post's terms of service. |

Here's my issue and hoping others may be able to help. I really want 4" quad burnt tips but it is impossible to find a 3" in with the dual 4" out, burnt, and staggered. Below are the closest on ebay. Now...I am being told by my muffler shop that they could cut off one of the welds and shave off about 1/4" and then re-weld back on to achieve the staggered look. I actually think I may end up going down that path unless any of you helpful gents has another suggestion or advice. The other option I have is to find a y pipe adapter with a 3" inlet and dual 2.5" outs and then do single burnt tips. See following pics. The problem is the measurement from center to center on most of these is exactly 4" which would mean my single 4" wide tips when welded on would be touching. Long stretch here but has anybody found a y adapter that has a little more spacing center to center? I really want the 4" tips to achieve look like the following: |

MSUGOGRN,
Is it an option to just weld on a reducer to the back of the tips to get your the inlet diameter you need? If the intent is to delete the muffler then you should have alot of room to play with in pipe length and fitment. For the people that want to keep the muffler then you are more restricted in what you can do. I would say max diameter pipe you can go with is 3" because the existing pipes coming out of the mufflers are really close together. Anything 3.5" and over in outlet diameter I dont believe will fit. Mine are 3" and I only have about a 1/4" between the 2 tips. I will try to take a better overhead picture to show you. Also I haven't really gotten into it much but length of the tip is also very important for the muffler keeping crowd. The vacuum flap assembly is the furthest back you can push the tips which isnt far at all so keep that in mind when buying your exhaust tip of choice. Too long and they will stick out too far from the diffuser. Too short and they will be hidden. Again if you are doing a full muffler delete then I think you will have enough room to reduce or expand the pipe to an inlet diameter of your choosing and also bend the pipe to get your tips to the final desired location you want. |
