So after weeks, perhaps even months of deliberation, I've placed an order for a BMW M Performance Exhaust with Carbon Fiber Tips.

I gave this a lot of thought, and did a lot of shopping around. First I secured the M branded Carbon Fiber Exhaust Tips from my preferred BMW dealership for around $1,300 for the set of 4. I preferred this option over the Akrapovic branded CF tips because the Akrapovic ones have a sort of dry carbon finish to them as opposed to the more traditional glossy finish in the M branded ones which match my wraparound carbon fiber diffuser a lot better.

Then I started shopping around for the exhaust system itself. My preferred shop, Specialty Automotive Treatments in Fort Lauderdale, was offering me the Akrapovic branded set (which is identical to the M Performance branded system) for a healthy discount. However, despite a lot of futile attempts by the folks at SAT, the guys at Akrapovic refused to provide them with a set without exhaust tips. This was an issue as I knew I definitely didn't want to use their tips, unless they were willing to ship me some in a gloss finish, which they also wouldn't do. The last option seemed to be ordering one from my dealership, which originally quoted me $8,500 for the exhaust. They later brought the price down to around $7,500 (still a lot higher than SAT's quote on the Akra) but were not willing to go any lower as they said it would prevent them from turning a profit.

There was also getbmwparts.com selling the system for $6,500 without tips but I hadn't dealt with them before and preferred to order such a big and expensive part through a dealership or performance shop for peace of mind.

In the end I found an out-of-state BMW dealership which had one in stock, it seems they had ordered it for a customer who left them hanging and were desperate to get rid of it. They sold it to me for slightly under $6,500 and I'm now waiting on the part to arrive. I'm going to have the guys at SAT handle the install as they already did an awesome job on my H&R springs, ClearBra, and custom front view camera. I'll keep you guys posted, document as much of this as I can and post pictures and video as soon as things start to move along.

The exhaust should get to Miami, or rather Fort Lauderdale as I'm having it drop shipped straight to SAT, late this week, or early next week. Then I'll probably drop the car off the day after they receive it. I hope to have it on the car by April 11 at the latest.

That should look great. I like the look of my black chrome tips from the Competition Package, I just hate how skinny they are which begs the question how much bigger are the Akra/M Performance tips compared to the stock? Anyone know?

I think they are 10 mm bigger than stock in diameter. I think that's half an inch bigger.

Thanks so much for the link! Those look to be exactly the diameter I'm looking for. That guy's M5 looks great. The color is not my cup of tea but it still looks amazing.

I think this is exactly what your car needed. The stock tips are a tad small. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all turns out. Good luck. I'll come see it in person next time I'm down there! The colour is different in the sun, it's actually pretty hot. Plus I'm biased, same colour as my m6.

Nice. It's going to look great. I like the glossy carbon tips but not sure about the machined part with the M logo. If that was black with machined //M logo it would be ideal but I definitely like it.

A bit disappointed. Received the OEM Carbon Fiber tips today and the finish is not glossy as seen in pictures. I've been informed by the dealer the preproduction tips had a gloss finish but for the production run Akrapovic made the OEM tips the same finish as their Evolution Line tips. I'm having Specialty Automotive Treatments take a look at them to see if it is within the realm of possibility to refinish them. They still look amazing, just not what I expected. Worst case scenario I still end up with a kick ass exhaust, just wish they were gloss as originally thought.

Picked up my new M6 GC today with the exhaust installed. a few days ago, my salesman called and asked if I wanted black tips or the normal tips. I was confused a bit but I said black because I ultimately wanted black.... sure enough I show up to pick up the car and it had the carbon tips. I think they screwed up here... they didnt even charge me for them!

Thanks man. I've actually been around Weston quite a lot this weekend. There was a meet at the Town Center just a few days ago. I posted some pictures in another thread.

I had the Carbon Fiber tips refinished in gloss carbon. I gotta say I was nervous as hell about this but SAT and their people really went above an beyond on this one. I was especially worried about the branding and serial number on the underside coming off after they sanded them but to my surprise they're just perfect. I know some may prefer how they looked before but this finish just goes perfect with all the other CF accents on my car. Exhaust is ready this afternoon by the way so expect a follow up thread with plenty of pictures, videos, and sound clips.

I like it. Looks great. What did they use to clear them?

To be honest I really don't know. I do know they had to repeat the process about 4x to get the finish how I wanted it. Apparently the first time they cleared it and applied one layer of coating and once they dried they looked the same as before. I'll ask them exactly what they did and post it in the follow-up thread for you.

OK thanks. I do prefer them with a semi gloss as well. Makes the carbon pop more.
