use ipod touch in iphone5 adaptor?

ipod fits in the cradle perfectly, charges, and keeps cool from the fan but car doesn't recognize it to play media. It’s a new ipod touch and works perfectly using the usb port in center console. The cradle just takes up space since I don’t have an iphone now but I like it holding the ipod.

I was considering just modifying the cradle to use the standard usb cable and port, but think i may have heard it is possible to make ipod work through coding or software (similar to allowing video files to play – I have not done that coding yet). Any ideas? Thanks.
