Is the car vibration associated with engine oil?
Long time did not post anything on this forum, because I was extremely busy in the past a few weeks.
Last week, I changed my engine oil on my own expense (the car is only 10000kms right now). After a week of driving with the new engine oil, I found I enjoyed the car more than before. What's the reason? The vibration during complete stop at traffic lights is totally gone!!! Man, I suffered with it in the past 9500kms. I can confidently say the vibration has gone now. Therefore, I am wondering what causes the vibration more. How can a simple oil change made a so big difference? Can anybody tell me what is the reason I had vibration but I do not have it now.

I understand where you are coming from. I hit 7000 miles on my car this week, and I believe I had to top off on oil about every 1000 miles. I say that, because I lost count of how many times I had to top off on oil when the low oil warning came up on my HUD.
That being said, it feels like right before the low oil warning comes up, my car has a bit of a vibration when at a complete stop at a light, but after a top off, she doesn't make a sound. I had my oil topped of last Friday, and now she is as smooth as butter.

I had it and lots of folks have it. It is a common issue for BMW non-M V8 engines

I am glad to hear once you top of the engine oil, you do not have the vibration anymore. However, as for my experience, I had the car 10000kms now and I had to top of engine oil two times before the recent engine oil change. As for me, It is not a issue for top of, whenever the engine oil is at max level or lower level, the car just vibrated at complete stops. However, all things get changed since I did the engine oil change. Vibration has been totally gone. I am glad I can enjoy the car now. After I did some research, I do find the rough idle or vibration is a very common issue for our N63tu or N63 engines. Almost all NON-M v8s have more or less this issue.

I've never experienced this. I'm puzzled how low oil can cause a vibration, unless it's something built-in (like lane departure warning!) to remind the driver - but that seems absurd.
Maybe when mine gets low I'll have the same problem. Currently I'm at 22,000 kms on the original factory installed oil. The dash CBS tells me I have 10,000 to go before a change is needed. This is very similar to my previous 645Ci which typically went 30,000 kms between changes.

As you have a 640 I would say bring it back to your dealer , I had two n55 engine motors in the past years and I never had any issue with n55. If you car also has the vibration I would say it is abnormal.

No connection. (Any engine that starts vibrating because of low oil is a few minutes away from complete destruction...)
The V8 idles a little low, especially with the A/C off. (It drops to about 500 at idle with A/C off, or about 650-700 with A/C on). All you need to do is ask the dealer to lift your A/C off idle speed to about 700 and that is the end of it. Maybe that's exactly what they did as part of some campaign when your oil was changed... R.

I cannot comment on why 6 cylinders do not do it - but I suspect they idle well above 500 rpm, as I recall from my old 335i. R.

Inline 6 cylinder engines are inherently perfectly balanced on both the primary and secondary order. V8s are not.
Roadsta is correct. Raise the idle a bit and you'll be fine. |
