11k miles on rears

Hi all

Had my 640 GC since Sept 21. Enjoying it etc

I have 275/30 on rear 20inch

Showing beginning of tyre cord showing through on inner fifth of tyre. I know of the classic BMW camber and increased wear here. Real PITA

11k Miles and i dont drive nuts. Middle of tyre 3/4mm . Fronts look brand new and are the same age.

I haven't got tyres aligned in a while but the car was perfectly aligned some time ago and the inner wear was the same though im not sure of the mileage. What mileage are you guys getting out of your rears?

I can't speak to the GC, but although my convertible looks like it has a fair amount of negative camber, the rear tires wear perfectly even. They must have a least 15,000 miles on them and have a good amount of life left.

hi,im in the uk too but have the 2 door f13 640d.
you dont say if you have 640i or 640d,but the diesel torque is harder on tyres than the petrol.
also you dont say if you have run flats or normal tyres.
i run normal tyres, kumho ps91..love them.i get 12k to 13k on the rear tyres and 16k on the fronts...
the wear on my tyres is almost even accros the whole width of the tyre .
i think tyre pressure has a lot to do with wear,i think the pressure stated by bmw is too high for me...i experimented on my first of 3 x 640ds with presures and grip and wear...i find 33psi front and 35psi rear has best grip and even wear too.
i always have alignment checked when i buy a car but not again unless i have reason to..
hopefully you dont have run flats,,and if alignment is ok (the person doing the alignment should check for worn suspension before alignment too) then it probably down to pressures.

Thanks Scuba - I have a petrol 640i

Interesting you get about the same, albeit with the greater torque of the Diesel.

Seems extremely low mileage but perhaps another alignment is needed. I was recommended to take the camber out by a garage just now but surely the factory settings are ideal handling wise etc?

Normal tyres - Potenza S007

I have a 650i GC and go through 3 sets of rears for every one set of fronts.

Mine is rear wheel drive.

~15-20k miles on rears
~50-60k miles on fronts

Always run Michelin A/S 3s, now I will have to start running 4s

Different car, but I had a MB CLK 550 that ate rear tires bald in about 13,000 miles. Wore them evenly, but down into the wear bars. My 650 is nowhere near that bad.

You don’t make it clear if it’s tyre or tyres i.e. just one of the rears or both.

I had a similar experience albeit with one of my fronts (640d GC) inner wear on the shoulder down to just about exposing the cords - the rest of the tyre was probably less than half worn.

I’d suggest getting the tracking / alignment checked - mine was out, although not hugely. New tyre fitted but not happened again. I suspect one or two potholes or the like to blame….

I would get alignment checked!

I am about to get some Contact 7s for my 640D as they have been getting some decent reviews. I was going to get Pilot sport 4S, but the tech is over 7years+ old now.

I think it would be better to have your allignment checked. I have a 640i running Michelin PS4S 305/30/20 at the rear with 2.5 negative chamber, and so far the rear tires are wearing out quite evenly. I do not really drive hard, and it is my weekend car.

Class Action Precedent?

In the early 90s, I bought my first Acura NSX. They ate the bespoke rear tires in 5,000 - 8,000 miles. This was so unexpected at the time that people were blowing tires and crashing - unaware that tires could wear out so fast.

I ended up getting 3 free sets of rears for free from Acura as a settlement from a class action suit.

If BMW designed this unusual wear into the camber or whatever, perhaps they too can be class actioned into some sort of reimbursement?
