Reversing lights

Is it just me, or does anyone else think they're very poor?
I reckon I'd get better rearward night vision if I stuck a candle on the back bumper.
In every other respect it's such a well sorted car, but this is one area where BMW allowed form to take precedent over function - very pretty rear light clusters, but the clear lenses are far too small.
