Anybody ditch their run-flats?

Looking at a left over 2014 GC and it has the 20s which are going to be just lovely here in Chicago (in a bad bad way). I could of course get 19s, and tires, and well, then I have the 20s and then the 19s and I still need to get tire and wheel insurance.

So it hit me that changing the 20s over to something like the Continental DWS would probably
1) improve the ride
2) remove the need for winter tires

Curious if anyone did this and what their thoughts were? As for a spare, well, that's what roadside assistance is for right?

run flats are like idiot lights, designed for the average know nothing about cars consumer so they don't cause more damage than they need to with a flat. Otherwise they are just heavy, dangerous (because its tough to tell you actually HAVE a flat), terrible ride quality, etc.
When mine go I will be putting on non-run flat along with most others. There are threads in this and the M6 section of people changing to the Continental DWS and being very very happy. Because yes, regardless what kind of tire I have, when it goes flat I am calling roadside, not driving slow to get to a tire shop and possibly ruin my rim and more...

Well personally, I love them on my X6 because if I get a flat (and I will know because that's what the TPMS is for), I can still drive home in the middle of freezing cold night. Worst case, if I'm too far from home, I throw my spare on. But that's with my X6 of course

With the 20s on the GC, there is simply no sidewall and yes, that kills not only the ride, but apparently from what I read, the tire as well (lots of bubbles). I did however get stranded twice with my M5 due to not having a spare or run-flats and that was not cool.

Speaking of M, don't those still come with regular tires? I didn't think they put run-flats on those (yet).

The M5/M6 are getting Pirelli P Zeros and Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Tells you what ///M thinks about BMW's pro-RFT choices.

Check out my thread on Bimmerfest: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=745383

I just changed out to the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx TT non-RFTs on my 20" 373M rims. I'm loving them so far, and this thread shows my solution to no spare.

The thread got a bit lengthy, so if you want the gist, read my first couple posts then skip to the last page and you'll see what I ultimately decided.

That's a great thread. I think I will be doing the same. I am however very curious if the Tire and Wheel insurance will cover non RFTs. I'm thinking about running the RFTs this summer and then switching to the Continental DWS for winter. Cheaper than a new set of wheels and tires. One question, is the Continental kit you bought the same as the one from BMW?

I don't have the tire/wheel insurance, but I've heard some people say that they do have it and have been able to swap to non-RFTs.

I believe the BMW and Continental kits are essentially the same in terms of how they work. I'm not sure if they're made by the same manufacturer. I got the Continental unit from Tire Rack as it is pretty highly rated while also being about $60 cheaper.

I love them on my GC for the same reason. I live in a remote area with potentially dangerous winter conditions. Roadside Assist would take at least an hour to reach me. I could freeze to death!!!

Neither alternative meets my needs. Ride compromises and unsprung weight make the RFTs a hoped-for but unrealized technology. Seems like committed efforts by the world's great tire manufacturers would have this sorted out by now...a run flat that approximates the ride of a conventional tire, how hard can that be?

Goop makes a helluva mess and doesn't always work, depending on the leak.

A limp-home spare would seem the best solution for me, but they are filling up the space they designed for my spare with other stuff...

I haven't used this stuff first hand, but it seems relatively easy and not too goopy and messy. The stuff is concealed, you hook a hose up to it, and the stuff goes directly into the tire. It distributes around the entire tire's inside to seal it up. After using it you have to buy new sealant and a new hose (about $30, I think).

We'll see how it works (hopefully I'll never have to, though). A spare would be a good solution, but there's the space issue, and I'm not a fan of jacking up a car of this caliber on the side of the road.

used it all the time. Ive been driving no-spare for over 15 years, even with cars that have spares. Remove the weight out, put a fix-a-flat jumbo can in there instead. Have a problem, fill up the tire and limp home

I'm approaching a decision point for my new summer tires as Spring is finally coming to MI. Without a doubt going non-RFT, with the Conti inflation kit.

I'm a huge fan of the Michelin PSS, but I don't really want to spend the dough for what can be considered diminishing returns compared to some other fine choices out there, given this is my last warm season with the car.

I have looked at the Dunlop TTs like Southy, but I'm really turned off to Dunlop now and it seems that the 275/285x30x20 sizes are fading away. Perhaps this tire is being discontinued.

Also considering the Nitto 555s, but read some less than favorable reviews about wet performance and noise.

The Conti DWs seem like a good buy, but also hard to find in the right sizes, especially through my local tire store - not sure why.

Next up is the Falken FK453, but I can't seem to find a lot of info/reviews on these and I'm not getting a warm fuzzy.

That leaves the Hankook V12 evo2. This is leading the pack now. Again, not a lot of info out there because this tire is so new. But if it's even 10% better than the evo1 (that gets great reviews), it's a hell of a tire for the money. With an $80 rebate on four, they come in at about $370 less than the PSS for a set.

To the earlier post, the mess is on the inside, the rim, TPI, etc.

What tires are available in exactly the stock tire sizes? Is it Conti DWS only?

I think thats the issue with the 20's, only the DWS has the exact size.

who cares about a mess inside your tire? when they replace it they wash it in the dunk tank and clean it up.

I went for it. At Discount Tire (America's Tire elsewhere), I ordered the Hankook V12 Evo2 (K120) in original size. With rebate and credit card discount, $798 out the door. Of course there's the cost of the Conti inflation kit to add on.

Of course. I will publish a full report. Only problem is the guy called me back and said the rears aren't available for 15 to 30 days. I have to wait. So I have a little time to destroy what's left of my DSSTs.

lol. Enjoy!

I did not realize these rear tires are that uncommon. I believe the M5, M6, 911, and F-Type use slightly wider tires at the back.

That can only mean that the prices are going to go up. Maybe I'll buy two sets of the DWS

When I was looking at the Pilot Super Sports, Tire Rack told me it would be 60 days before they would have them in stock. That was a couple months ago, but still...

In the case of the HK V12 Evo2, it's becasue they are so new. These tires were just released to market. Hankook has not built up inventory yet. According to my sales guy, they literally have to manufacture them. He is ordering from the factory direct. Nothing in the warehouse. The fronts have inventory available. I asked him to look for the 285/30/20 and these weren't available either.
