Cool New 640d owner, help on exhaust and modifications?

Hello all, so I recently turned 21 and I treated myself to a '62 640d coupe, 50k mileage, deep sea blue, nappa cinnamon leather with comfort and active seats, hud, parking assist, reverse and surround camera, sunroof, 373M 20s, soft close doors, massage seat base (I think the official name is oscillating seat function), adaptive headlights, anthracite headlining, brushed aluminium surround finish, Sun Protection glass, speed limit display, fine wood grain oak interior trim and a few more I can't remember off the top of my head.

So first thing I did was take it to DD Coding and with the typical English weather it was pi$$ing it down and the car was very tail happy on the way, unfortunately I've got the CIC System so I was restricted to what we could do however I went with gearbox, engine, traction, fuel pump and steering update, m6 active sound, mirrors fold on un/lock, acoustic lock confirmation, seat belt beep 5 sec, rear drl enabled, dogs on with high beam, flashing hard breaking, digital speedo, DVD in motion, indicator and music on HUD.

With the actual car updates the car stuck to the road a lot better and genuinely felt like the car was tied together properly. Would definitely recommend, here's mine on his page

I will be going for a remap from MSL Performance in Birmingham as I've been following them for years and seen the work they do and they're very reputable. The remap includes before and after dyno printout with gains of approx 80bhp and 95ft lb taking it to 390-400bhp and 560lb ft torque... 60lb ft more than an M6 and 51lb ft more than an Aventador!

So with actual mods I will be getting the grill, side indicator and window surround in gloss black as my wheels are already black, carbon fibre splitter and v style spoiler, maybe if I have some change left over there is a lovely carbon fibre diffuser I have seen which goes with the standard exhaust and doesn't require quad exhausts or I might just go with the 650i diffuser and exhaust setup.

One thing I can't get much info on Is exhaust modifications. I want a more grunty sound outside but with minimal spending, any ideas would be appreciated. Image of the car here
Also now the number plate fell off so unfortunately my front end has a gorgeous clean look

Also that's my Arctic Silver 840ci with 44k genuine miles

It's just a slow forum. Most of the people that buy these cars are not into the modding scene, and there is a small pool to begin with so don't take it personally.

Two beautiful cars!

Far as the exhaust, I can't help there. Diesel sixes aren't even sold in my country. I have a Meisterschaft on my 650, and it sounds great, but it does have a couple issues. On the highway there is a noticeable drone if I'm in "D" with a low revving gear. The setup came with electric valves to allow half the exhaust to pass through mufflers, but the valve pretty much never worked.

Cheers for your response Mike and yeah I've noticed every other 6 on the road atleast in the UK has got an older fella behind the wheel, I've only seen two with a young driver and have you checked the electrical connections to them (I'm an electrician and electrical test engineer)

Hi DeepSeaF13,
I have been having similar thoughts with mine. I’d be tempted to remove the centre box and fit a set of custom back boxes.
Although, it seems that with a derv you get more “tractor sound” on tick over and a turbo whistle anything over that. Personally, I’d retain the DPF as I think new laws are being put into place in the UK soon.
I have been in diesels with no DPF and on boost, in some places, they can be almost petrol turbo sounding. Almost...

Also if you want a good sound, try looking for a proper active sound setup. I saw a video on YouTube/vimeo of a 6er with this fitted and it sounded very nice. Impressive stuff.

Coding to M6 helps inside, but for noise outside I feel that would be the way to go.

I fitted 650 exhausts and valance to mine but I should have probably just went down the custom exhaust route as the changes I made are aesthetic only and not the best value.

I could go on for ages.. sorry.

The issue with the valves was mechanical. Meisterschaft used cheap low alloy steel, looks like 1020. Someday maybe I will pull them off and rebuild them, I dont think the power supply was an issue.

It's not so much the age thing, it's just what people are after. The 6 is a fast moving country killer with comfort and style. Most buy it and keep it low key. There are plenty of guys on the boards with all kinds of options to bring it up a notch.

My favorite part of the car is its in the league of a Porsche, but only people that into cars know what it is. A 911 would be too much attention for me.

A shame to hear that, if I was to get new pipes personally I'd go to an established welder, working in the rail industry I know loads of fabricators so if I go down that route I'd just straight pipe it with 650 tips

Dodge_Gowans how much did the 650 conversion cost? I've seen the proper active sound videos however I don't wanna spend ££££s as it's not really something I want that bad or an issue, if there's a simple not so expensive change then I'd go for it, has anyone removed resonators on their diesel? Also does it affect mpg? And please don't hold back cos I could go on for days talking about it lol

Welcome aboard, finding a loaded 6 in this country is a challenge. Seems a lot of the stock floating around in autotrader are ex lease cars at basic spec. Without a lot of toys this car lacks the wow it should have.

I'm interested the gearbox update, was this just a firmware update?

I believe it was a firmware update as mines a 62 pre lci and the lci ones have different firmware however that's just what I think i couldn't tell you for certain. You can contact Adam at DD Coding, lovely chap and very helpful, I found before the coding in lower gears it was a bit jerky and after the coding it was very smooth and more refined

Also the most loaded 640d I've seen is for sale on AutoTrader atm for £25-26k
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...?atmobcid=soc3

I found a few when looking for mine decently loaded but the massaging seats sold it for me, I first found them a bit weird as it's just on the seat base but it's nice and relaxing on the motorway

this is the 2nd time you referenced a 62 - WTF is a '62? are you referring to your current model 6 series? It may be why people haven't commented - they don't know what the hell you are talking about!

62 is for MY2012. New plates are released twice each year. So 2012 had a 12 plate and a 62 plate. Refers to a part of the registration plate detail. It’s a UK registration thing.
It’s typical for people to refer to their cars in this way.

Got it - thanks for the explanation! Completely different nomenclature than what we use in the states.

I should have said pre lci.

Does anyone have info on removing resonators and how it'll affect the if it will at all?

Also my seatbelts just seem to fall and don't automatically pull back up to sitting position, any fixes?

I genuinely think it will be difficult to make the car sound good (for a budget) although I think you can improve it at the sacrifice of some extra noise on tick over.

I fitted an air filter kit to my previous 123d and it gave the car a nice spool up and flutter sound from the turbos. Not sure if you can get the same kit for our engine but I’m sure something could be done.

If you search for 535d exhaust systems, you’ll get a rough idea of the noise that can be achieved. Don’t go crazy trying to get it to sound loud as no doubt it will spoil the motorway cruiser element of the car.

As far as MPGs, I wouldn’t worry about this at all. Any change will be negligible. Depending on the sound you achieve, i’d surmise that you might use a little more fuel at first, because you’ll no doubt drive harder to hear the sound. Ha!

Have you considered upgrading the tail pipes for larger round ones (retaining the rear valance you have). That would give you an improvement in looks/ individuality but work out sooooo much cheaper.

Look on eBay mate. I think the OEM tips are like £200 and the valance is like £70-100.

Just an idea but for the money it might pay to go to a shop and get something custom?

If you need info - hopefully This thread will help you.
Should give you all the info you need.
Let me know how you get on?

Thanks for the link, I'll keep you updated. Should be ordering parts in the next week but first thing on the to do list is remap, hopefully booking in this week, Will be posting figures.
After that everything else is going to be aesthetic i.e dechrome and spoiler, contemplating the splitter because my area is covered in humps and high curbs but I still might get it. In 2 minds about the splitter at the mo
