Time to move on...

Ok, had my 2014 Imola 650xi GC for almost three years. It was the most beautiful car I have ever owned - both inside and out.

And it was long... 16.5 feet to be exact.

But damn, it sounded amazing - on start and acceleration. Oh and the B&O stereo was the best stock system - ever.

and the steering - beyond perfect.

and the tchotchkes... omg... HUD, heated and ventilated seats. Amazing.

Alas, time for something different. Very different.

I've purchased the M2. No sunroof No HUD No B&O No V8 sound No rear doors No AWD

and I love it. I really love it. In a perfect world, I would have the 650 as the perfect date night car and the M2 as my daily driver. I thought I would miss AWD, but honestly, I forgot how great RWD with snows can be.

I will continue to haunt this board and I feel so lucky to have had a six figure car that turned heads like no other. But it is time to get back to something really fun (nimble?). I'll let you know how it goes.

Later dude...

Congrats my friend.
We both had good experience with amazing 6 series. As you said everything with this car is perfect however it's a big and heavy car.
I hope you enjoy the nimbleness of your M2 and to be honest with you I don't care if I wanted to get M2 without any luxurious such as B&O or HUD because this car is built for something else... FUN
I too returned my M6 since 3 years lease was up and now I am behind the wheel of M4 . Is your M2 Manual ?

But of course I got the manual That might be one of the things I don't miss about my 650, the lazy transmission when not in sport Now if I'm in the wrong gear, it is my fault.

Congrats on your M4 as well - love the color!

100% agree with you about Manual. I got manual too . The 7 speed DCT on M6 was fast and amazing but MT is something else. The only way you feel connected to the car.

Here is my thread for M4. http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1328487
I like the Long Beach Blue color too. Please post some pictures of your car.
I have a feeling your car must be a lot more fun than mine especially on track

Congratulations! That's the point of a lease, after all, right? You get to jump around and try different cars... sometimes, as you said, very different!

Having fun in a car is a must for me. My 650xi GC hasn't yet arrived (should be here in a few more weeks), but if it's anything like my 550xi (and I'm pretty sure it will be), then it'll be a nice, large, somewhat boaty highway cruiser that brings amazing luxury together with fantastic styling, nice speed, and typical BMW build. But nimble? Corner carver? Sports car handling? Nope, nope, and nope.

Congrats on the M2 - that one should be a true blast to drive. And after 3 years, maybe you'll be looking for that luxury land yacht again!

I have a manual 650 (actually 2...the e63 version is for sale). Honestly, it's virtually perfect. So it's not a track star, but I never take it to the track.

If you would have purchased a manual 650, I wonder if you would have gone to the M2. The 650 is better in every way (including acceleration), except handling.

Hmmm, I'm not so sure I agree.
First off, no chance of an manual gran coupe here.
Second off, after having both, To me, 650 is not better in every way including handling (for one, the M2 seat blows away the seat in the GC in terms of comfort).

Third, I had an e60 M5 with stick. I did like it, but at some point, when the car gets that big, it just feels wrong with stick - well wrong is a bad term, but just not right?

Long story short, I have some very tight low speed turns on my way to work. With the 650 being so darn long, I had to wait until there were no cars coming either direction when making a right turn - because it was almost impossible to stay out of the oncoming traffic lane when making a right turn.

and yes, like I said, I did enjoy my 650 (mostly in the last 6 months), but it was certainly time for something new

I dont feel comfortable with a car as long as 196" (6er GC) with Manual transmission. I also not sure why you say acceleration is better. M2 is about 1000 lb lighter than 650i GC and have 360 HP (compare to 445 HP) so M2 has better power to weight ratio

The GC is very long. I have a coupe and it really does feel a lot smaller than the GC. I can't believe you like the M2 seat better. It may hug better, but it is not as compliant or soft. Maybe you had different seats in your GC than me?

No car is "wrong" with a stick. A bigger car is a bigger car with or without a stick. But I think you would have found your GC to be much more engaging if it was a regular coupe and had a stick

The M2 just feels cheap to me (and so does the 3 and 4 series). Too much plastic everywhere and too cramped.

Most specs list the M2 and the 650 0-60 acceleration around at 4.2 seconds. Again, I was referring to the coupe and the OP has a GC. So maybe not better in terms of faster, but better in terms of sound! No artificial piping crap. Just pure V8 music.

M2 is a great car, but the manual 650 coupe is the all around winner IMO. I was debating between the two myself and could stand the cramped, cheaper interior in the M2 (and worse in the 235M). To each his own

Guys, not sure why we'd even be comparing 2-series and 6-series cars? They're purposefully intended for different uses. They're going to be, as a result... different. One is not better than the other unless you're discussing a particular "value" - which is going to be personal.

The 6-series, whether in coupe or GC format, is a grand touring car. It's designed for fast, long distance driving, accompanied by lots of luxury, technology, and comfort. I think it does this quite well. The 2-series was designed as a sporty, agile vehicle... and in M-format, a high-achieving performer to boot. It's designed to put smiles on your face as you toss it through corners, but not being an all-out track car, you can still allow it to pull double duty as a commuter vehicle.

They're just extremely different cars with extremely different missions. In a perfect world, you'd have both in your garage.

I was referring to the performance and not luxurious and interior material. There is no doubt the interior of 6er is the best interior over the entire BMW lineup. It's interesting that I like the 650i seat leather (Napa) even better than M6 seat leather (Merino). Merino is softer and looks more beautiful but after a year it's like worn while Napa looks more shiny and better. I replaced the driver seat leather on M6 after a year because or lots of worn and wrinkles.

We were not comparing two cars. We were comparing the MT 6er with MT M2 in term of acceleration and how MT fits for a small car over a big car

My friend with a 550xi and I would switch occasionally. I think I posted a thread on it somewhere. To me... the 650 handled better, sounded better (had sport exhaust after all), and the steering was sooo much better. But the 550 was more nimble? The throttle mapping was just so different - it felt FAST at all speeds. They could not be more different cars! On that note, I think you will really like the 650, just make sure to put it in sport when you need to snap around town

Yes, the seats in the GC are different than the coupe and... not knocking the 650 coupe, but just like a stick in a big car, a large two door car is not my style. I've never actually owned a car as beautiful as the GC.

To me, the M2 is engaging - it wraps around you (as you noted), you become one with the car - kind of like the previous gen 3-series. Yes, there are certainly some imperfections (electric steering has a small dead spot and then TURNS like crazy), dakota leather, etc. However, I remember saying to my dealer a week after I got my 650 that I thought I might have made a mistake - whereas, with the M2, I just texted him last night that I was really really starting to like this car - winter in Chicago and all!
edit: That doesn't mean the M2 is a better car (or that the 650 is a better car), it just means that they are very very different cars and today, I personally prefer the M2. But in three years, who knows? That new 550xi certainly looks yummy.

They are different and both great in their own ways. I have a couple true sports/exotic/track cars so the 650 is the perfect daily driver for me. And to me, the most beautiful BMW currently. I honestly don't know what I will drive as a DD in 3 years. How do you top a 650 stick in terms of luxury, comfort, speed, functionality (4 seats and a large trunk), 2 doors, and RWD?!

Doug - Congrats on the M2! As a fellow former GC driver (640iX) - my sentiments about the GC are very similar to yours. I am grateful for my 3 years I spent with it but was ready for something smaller. Is the M2 easier to get these days or is there still a waiting list?

Congrats again

Jeff

Hey Jeff - yes, of course I remember the old days here with you

Thanks for the congrats - I officially got on the waiting list a year ago with my dealer and I was #2, getting my car in September - but since BMW would not let me out of my 650 lease early.... I passed on that, gave it to #3 and took his spot. Which came up in November.. car delivered in December, but I could not get it until January.

So... long story short... they pop up here and there at MSRP throughout the country and most dealers have a waiting list. But if you try hard enough, you can certainly find one. BMW is still not making too many of them for some reason.

You are right. They are rare and not every dealer has one but Crevier has 3 of them if someone is looking for :

I was reading the other side of forum (M2) and they say M2 is 3" wider than M240i. Is this correct?

Look closely at the pictures on Crevier's site.... The white one for instance has a $8,995 markup on it

As you probably know, the California dealers are well known for doing this (and getting it!).

So while it may list at $58,480 (with a bunch of port/dealer add-ons), they are kicking it up to $67,475.

And yes, I think with the rear fenders, it probably is 3" wider.
