Break in period
I have had my car for 2 weeks now. The first week I followed the break in period requirements...this week and especially on the way home tonight not so much. Should I be concerned?

How many miles? Hopefully you gave it the max revs specified (5000) under light load and plenty of engine braking for the first 50-100 miles. After that it does not really matter too much, but don't give it the full beans.

This is the way to do it IF you do not want to add oil ever 1000 miles or so.

On my M5... did not follow the break in period... and my dyno and 0-60 results were not that impressive. On my M6.. I babied it the first 1200 miles per the book and then slowly increased my aggressive driving up to 3000 mies, and my dyno results and 0-60 at 4000 miles are 15 percent better than my M5. There were several press cars that were taken back by BMW because they were not properly broken in and the 0-60 times that the reporters were getting were way off like my M5's were.
Also I talked to a BMW engineer and he said that it is absolutely critical to follow the break in requirements if you want the best performance out of the car. He said that they wanted to put more software restrictions on the cars for the first 1200 miles but were overruled by the sales guys, because of the fear that if someone went to test drive the car, they would not feel it was that fast...

Thanks for the feedback. I should be ok. I just hit 600 miles yesterday. I probably opened it up 4 times from a standing start 0 to 60 and 5 times on the hwy from 65 to 100mph. I will pull it back for the time being and stay true to the guidance.

John... you are right and wrong. Rings take approximately 25 hours of running for them to seat in. However the transmission and drivetrain is another story, as it takes approximately 1200-3000 miles to break in hence why BMW does NOT recommend doing a launch control start until after 3000 miles.

But after the initial 40/60 miles I drive normally just use the gears to slow down all the time, never used a drop of Oil in any BMW "M" cars i have owned. They all pull like stink also, never down on power comparing to other "M" cars i have driven, in fact mine feel stronger.

You're fine. I did EuroDelivery and after leaving the Welt with only 17 miles on the car, I hit 146mph on the Autobahn and pushed it a few times over 5500 RPM. You'll be fine.
