Brake dust

Every time I clean the wheels, I'm reconsidering black! Wow, does this thing kick out a lot of dust. After 5 days, it's bothering me to the point where I have to clean them.

It probably doesn't help that the wheels are Platinum Silver.

The routine is to hose down the wheels real good, cover them in Meguiar's aluminum wheel cleaner, agitate/brush for 30 seconds, then hose down thoroughly. pH is 7.5

Now here's some advice that might work Can I apply it or does it have to be brought into a shop? Wheels off? Any recommendations in the OC?

Carbotech makes a "low dust" pad for our cars. It reduces the brake dust by about 75% from OEM. Only problem is because they are low dust the compound is harder and they tend to squeak once in a while.

I run them on my car and deal with the squeaking because to me it's better than a nice set of wheels plastered in brake dust.

Its funny you mention the squeaking. I had a problem with squeaking from the day I drove my car off the lot. I dealt with it for about 2k miles and had them swap out the pads. Now after about 150 miles im having the squeaking problem AGAIN.

Its a 2015 model with the CP. Non Ceramic and Im wondering what the hell is causing the problem. I too notice a lot of brake dust kicking out. But I have my car washed at least once every 10 days. Im really at a loss here. Are there any other pad recommendations you might be able to make?

I have the carbotech low dust pads and love them. Braking performance is maybe a little compromised but unless you are on the track, you are good.

I need to replace them after approx. 4k miles on them.

Man ... I'd just wash more often and give the car and rims the TLC it/they deserve

Just sayin!!!

They squeak regardless if my car is freshly washed or not. If after 150 miles on new brake pads squeaking is the result of the car not being washed soon enough after then I think thats a problem in of itself.

We've had some success with the Pagid brake pads for the M3/M4. A bit less brake dust, so less wheel cleaning

Pagid is working on a product for the M6. I'll update you when they're ready!

Sounds good.

All carping aside, I'm most concerned about performance and won't compromise my safety and stopping ability for a little convenience. Looking forward to hearing more about Pagid.

Search the threads for properly "bedding in" your brakes. Mine haven't really squeaked in several thousand miles.

Back in the old days the dustless pads were simply pads with material that did not show as much. It was making the same amount of dust but the lighter color of the dust these produced kept the dust from being as noticeable. Any interaction with the wheels was still going on.

I don't remember this though. The early dustless ones were just as good - the way those guys drove it would have been well known if they weren't as good..

Right attitude!! Form follows function. Function is key, then worry about what it looks like.

I'm going to have to do this. I have heard of a few ways. I'm curious to see what you all have come up with. As most everything else said around here makes sense, it's probably a good routine.

Get the CCB upgrade for your car. Virtually no dust. Its ONLY about $14K for the upgrade.

I ordered the Pagid front ceramic pads. They are supposed to ship in about a week. The Carbotech pads are nice for the low dust but I am tired of them squeaking.

If anybody is interested in Carboech front pads with ~5,000 miles on them let me know and I will give you a good price on them. They are pricey new so if you want to give them a shot it would be a win win for both of us.

The brake dust is absurd. I have the matte black wheels and it might not look as bad as your platinum silvers but it makes them look dingy. I clean them a few times a week a ton of scrubbing.
