Planning on painting my calipers.

As the title states, I want to change the color of my calipers from the blue of the steel rotor brakes to something that better compliments my custom wheels and my Sakhir paint. I never thought the blue matched my paint very well but now with the beautiful matte smoke finish on my wheels I think it definitely needs to change. I was thinking of a matte gold or something similar to the calipers in the carbon ceramics, however, since I'm not trying to create some fugazi CCBs I'm thinking I might go with Austin Yellow from the new M3/4. What do you guys think?

How about your cars color? I think a darker gray/smoke would look good or silver. Black is an option too.

This is exactly why I had my calipers redone the moment I got my new wheels installed. Makes a huge difference.

Whatever color you go with my advice is to have them powdercoated vs. painted. I am not sure how much you track the car (if any) but I have seen you post a few events that you attended and it seems like you might be the type of guy that puts the car through proper usage.

As you know I painted mine and my brakes got too hot on a track weekend and it roasted the paint. I just had mine redone and went with powdercoat this time.

Prismatic has the best color selection:
http://www.prismaticpowders.com/powder-coating-colors/

You will want color powder and also clear powder. I ordered 10lbs of each and it was WAY too much so you are probably fine with 5lb color and 5lb clear. I went with Prismatic because the local powder coating shop doesn't have a huge selection of colors -- your shop might have what you need though.

If you are going to go with the BREMBO decal (or even the M decal) you will want to apply the decal after the powder coating has been done. Then you will want to take the calipers to an automotive/body shop and have them clear coat ONLY the flat face of the caliper where the decal has been applied (just to seal the decal on the caliper). Don't have them clear the entire caliper because (again) paint and heat don't play nice.

You can get the BREMBO calipers made by this guy:
http://www.ebay.com/usr/advantage-design

He makes quality decals and he ships them quickly. I went with a 5" width on the newly done calipers I just got back from being powder coated. 5" is probably the max you can go otherwise it's going to look funky.

Also, if you are going to have them powdercoated you need to make sure all the seals are removed (or the oven will roast the seals). I suggest you have BMW break down your calipers for one reason. I've had BMW break down my calipers twice and on both occasions a bleed screw broke off. On the first occasion BMW warrantied it out (no charge) but on the 2nd occasion BMW would only cover 2/3 of warranty cost. The other 1/3 was covered out of pocket by my local BMW dealer due to me being a good customer I guess.

Sorry for the lengthy post... I kind of went through hell and back with my calipers from being painted to being powder coated. Would hate to see you go through the same so hope I can help with the information provided.

Brian

Oh and yes... I think the yellow would look good. I think in general any bright, light, or loud color looks good. It really makes people notice the actual size of the caliper.

Here is the link when I posted of the gran coupe.
I painted the calipers yellow and added the M logo back to it.
I chose to paint over powder coat on this application.
Generally I prefer to powder coat but due to time restraint and needing to get the vehicle ready for an event we chose to paint. No issues at all.
The best paint and clear was used. The finished result is perfect

Guys, another terrific way to deal with the calipers is MGP's caliper covers.
Aircraft aluminum, stainless mounting hardware. They also reduce brake dust.
Ordered mine with BMW logo. Easy install, love 'em.

Not sure these would fit the M6 calipers would they?

Don't do it Twitch! To me the M calipers are part of M-car's character! I would not hide them with those Aluminum covers!

The stock 650 calipers are plain black, with no logo. To me the MGP covers are a no-brainer.

I'm powder coating or painting brother. No need to worry. Now I'm just curious if they are the same calipers despite having different rotors. Thought they'd be different.

I wonder if those can trap heat inside the caliper ?

I'm digging that yellow. Maybe color matching your calipers to your body color as a thought as well? That would look nice too

MGP actually states that their covers reduce heat buildup and reduce brake dust. Hard to test the heat claim, but dust issue make sense as the caliper is shrouded.
