Being told to stay away from 650i and M6

Was looking at the 2013+ 650i and possibly an M6, but I'm being told left and right that these V8 engines are horrible ticking time bombs

Thoughts and opinions?

Nonsense. The N63TU in the modern 650's is very reliable. The older N63 had it's fair share of problems. I spent 3 years with an N63TU in my '14 550xi before ordering the '17 650xi GC... not a single problem.

Avoid the n63 and s63 but the updated TU motors are solid so far.

Really, how bad are the N63 engines. People here make it sound like they all fail. Any real stats? How about stats after the "customer care" package (aka recall)?

I don't know about stats but my S63 failed. And the customer care package doesn't cure the problem. It is just necessary maintenance that will need to be done again if you own it long enough. Buy a year newer and forget it about it. It's a no brainer.

Multiple sets of plugs and injectors, vacuum lines and a stretched timing chain.

Whoever told you this BS is out of mind! I used to have both 650i and M6 with N63tu and S63tu and both engines are fantastic. Powerful and lots of torque. No major issue at all...

Kinda OT but how does it feel moving from V8's to an I6? I can't even fathom the thought of giving up my V8's especially when most of my cars are/were V8's. Not that I don't like 6 cylinder engines, but I don't mind anything as long as there's at least one V8 in the garage

Well it's obviously different feeling but this I6 is making even more power than N63tu and a bit less torque but over a way lighter platform.
The exhaust sound of Competition Package is not as nice as S63tu but I like it specially in sport+ mode... something like N63tu. Has smaller turbos but large enough for a 3600 lb car... Overall I'm happy with her

The only two 6 cylinder cars I have are my 6er and my Jag. I was really close to trading in the 6er for a CPO E93 M3 but the deal didn't go through because of warranty issues. Who knows, maybe I'm destined to replace it with an M4 as well. One things for sure if I ever get an F8X it'll be the same color as yours. Austin yellow is gorgeous.

Yeah my favorite colors on M cars are Sakhir Orange and Austin Yellow.
My M6 in SO was really gorgeous and head turning; however this AY M4 with SO interior is another type of beauty I still love E9x M3 but this M4 with CP is lots of fun. I highly recommend you to go with CP for the sake of more power/torque and much stiffer suspension causing a lot more grip and traction over regular M4.

I was told the same thing by a BMW service advisor. He showed me the number of 8cyl returned for issues and the cost of repairs. He recommended the 6cyl for reliability and to lease the 8cyl and turn it back in...never buy. That's what I was told. I bought a 640i and so far no issues. I came from a 2008 550i (that had an oil issue).

Original owner of a 2013 N63TU since October 2012 and now with 34.5K miles. This engine is beyond reliable and extremely strong. Plan on keeping this V8 for at least another 5-8 years.

The N63 has the well deserved unreliable reputation, not true with the 2013+ N63TU.

I have a 2013 M6 with an engine designation of S63T. this does not match either side of the discussion, please shed some light on this engine designation.
