On the V8 issue, the N63 original, TU0, TU1, and TU2, as I understand it, will all fail due to the heat of the turbos baking the two rear cylinders. Period. We had an X5, 2011, with the original N63, it got down to 400 miles / quart of oil at 114,000 miles. Absurd. Several mechanics told us the same thing - the heat just trashes the rear cylinders and there is nothing you can do about it. Oil change frequency may prolong the life a bit, but this is just not a motor that is going to run to 200K miles. Apparently the S63 is better (bigger intercoolers? Not sure), and the TU3 is supposedly better. When our X5 died, we would have loved a 650 GC, but we settled for a 640 GC for the more durable motor.

Back to this posting, my brother had intimate relationships w source. Anyone own a 2020 740i?
This employee was top tier manager at a very large BMW store. Their comment was tell your brother to stay away from the eight cylinder, to many problems . End of discussion. Last edited by Chaos236; 12-22-2023 at 06:39 AM.. |

It’s been a while now. How are you enjoying the drive? I can’t seem to leave mine in the garage. Might have to get another with all of the fantastic miles I am putting on it. |

Gorgeous! Glad you’re liking it.
I’m fine with the seats 90% of the time, on 170 mi round trip daily. Am right behind you on miles, so have the transmission kit and spark plugs ready to change out next weekend. The joys of ownership… |

Auto trans kit for our 8HP transmissions. Not really “lifetime” fluid. Manufacturer ZF recommends changing out fluid - and therefore also pan with its integrated filter - by 150K km (~90K mi). Previous discussions on this board IIRC recommend at 60-80K miles.
(see attached ZF product data sheet dated July 2021) zf-lifeguardfluid-8-it.pdf As to coils, no, I’m just changing the plugs. Coils should last at least 100K miles. Last edited by FlyinLowSD; 12-26-2023 at 10:28 PM.. |
