Oil Consumption revisited...dealer added too much oil?

So I got a warning light that I was one liter low again. been averaging 675-750 miles.

Complained to dealer and BMW NA. I am now being tested, and to my surprise, I have gone over 1,300 miles, which i found suspicious.

So I went back and looked at my service record and it says diagnosis is 2 liters low (versus one quart on the screen).

They added 2 liters and it says diag code showed oil at max.

No wonder I am going so far. What gives?

Well after 1438 miles, the warning came on. That's 734 miles a liter.

that's a problem
I'm getting a new engine block because after inspection they found the bores out of tolerance. Engine being rebuilt as we speak.

They may argue that regardless that is still in tolerance. I am also concerned that they added too much oil.

“Oil consumption is normal on all engines,” BMW spokesman Hector Arellano-Belloc said in an e-mailed statement. “BMW vehicles have long intervals between oil changes (10,000 miles). BMW engines (excluding the BMW M) may consume up to one quart of engine oil per 750 miles under certain driving conditions.” He added that BMW’s M performance models may consume even more oil than that.

To that a wise person would ask "under what driving conditions is it NOT normal for such a high consumption of oil?"

So 690 and 674 on the last two bottles of oil. Spoke again with service rep, sent him mileage. He will talk with service manager and BMW NA. The issue, of course is the magic 700 mile mark, which they say is normal.

You can by all means refer to my case, I picked up my car 5 days ago, doing the break-in at the moment. Whole new block went in with the rest kind of rebuilt. Not sure how it pans out I am skeptical of rebuilds, but since its got a new block I'm not too worried.

Ask them to strip the engine and diagnose cylinder walls and pistons.

"Ask them to strip the engine and diagnose cylinder walls and pistons."

I can ask, but don't expect them to agree.

So now consistently getting under 700 miles before oil is needed, so back to the dealer today.

Feel sorry for you, S63 is well known to consume oil, but most go 2, 3000 miles before asking for oil, under 600 miles is just bad. Hopefully they can get your a new engine or something.

You need a new engine, or at least block, that's just crazy!

I've said it on here before and I'll say it again, it's all down to how they are run in. Baby it too much and they will drink oil.

My next oil change is due soon, I've done almost exactly 10,000 miles since the last one (I do them at double the service indicator interval). How much oil has it used? None. Started at 'Full' after measuring the level, checked it again yesterday, it's still 'Full'. So don't believe the bull shit about 'they all do that sir' because they don't.

Well BMW, N.A. is sticking with its 1.5 liters per 1,000 kilometers is acceptable, so for us Americans that is roughly 410 miles per quart. I am running 600-700 miles per so nothing will be done. They did show me another bulletin that said when the car asks for oil to put in two quarts instead of one.

1000km per litre equates to 586.2 miles per quart, not 410. So your 594 is exceedingly close.

Richard, its 1.5 liters per 1,000 km, not 1 liter.

From the service bulletin:

Because of their increased power output and torque, M engines have a maximum permissible oil consumption of 1.5 l/1000 km

Sorry, most specs I've seen are in L per 1000km. 1L per 1500km is a crazy amount, pretty much add 1L every time you fill the tank with fuel.

No, 1.5l per 1000km.

It has been every two tankfuls for me.

If it is so "normal" find out what you car is worth, and then ask them to buy your car, and see what they say and how much they offer you for it. I bet their tune changes then.
