Updates to Start Stop on 6 Series Gran Turismo

Not a 6 series owner, but thought some of you may like this... If posted elsewhere, my apologies. Looks like new system uses more inputs to know when to start/stop.

Intelligent Automatic Start/Stop (with default On)

REVIEW

Automatic Start/Stop, sometimes called "MSA" (Motor Start/stop Automatic), is a standard BMW feature that reduces fuel consumption and thereby lowers emmisions by turning the engine off when appropriate, for example while stopped at a red light. In recent years on non-hybrid vehicles, the driver has the abilty to select whether the feature is active or not, by pressing the button located near the ignition button.

WHAT'S NEW - MSA Connected with Default On

A new and intelligent motor start/stop system debuted on some vehicles starting with July 2017 production. The intelligent MSA Connected system interacts with multiple vehicle features, depending on how the vehicle is equipped. It smartly works in tandem with the navigation system as well as camera and radar based driving assistance features to more seamlessly stop and start the engine.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The system takes data souces (GPS and map) as well as situational awareness of external factors (based upon camera and/or radar) to better determine if the engine should be turned off as well optimize the start up. This intelligent system is designed to provide a more seamless and comfortable automatic stop/start sequence. The camera and radar hardware can be found in the Active Driving Assistant packages with option codes such as 5AS and 5AT. Due to the enhanced performance of this system, it is programmed to be "Default On". It cannot be reprogrammed to "Last User Mode".

FEATURE OVERVIEW AND REQUIRED HARDWARE

The overview below indicates the situations the system can "read" to better optimize engine stops and starts. The blue boxes represent the required hardware for these situations to be considered.

MODEL AVAILABILITY

As of July 2017 production, the following MSA Connected is available on the following models:

>> G30 5 Series

The following models will launch with MSA Connected:

seems to make sense to me. There are many situations you would not want start/stop to kick in. Using the navigation's maps to identify those common situations is a smart move.

In any case, I'm just glad the default can be set for it to be off.
