European Delivery
Fellow members:
I would like to start a poll of how many of us would like to start another European Delivery for the US. I am going to pick up a Euro Spec 530d M pkg Touring at BMW Welt in Munich next month. While there, I asked to speak to someone at BMW Welt about restarting the program. I will document the Euro delivery and submit my interview to the ROUNDEL. Let me know your thoughts. |

I think you are probably assuming that everyone knows more about the program than they do, including me. I know it exists (or existed) as an option, but never knew enough to understand why I would want to do that. Besides an excuse to fly to Germany and I guess see some BMW facility, what are the advantages of European delivery? Once delivered, who ships it to the US? Anyway, a short summary of the reasons to use such a program might help get more, and more informed, poll responses.

Well, here's what I know (and it's a long way from everything): The key advantage or selling point was that European Delivery significantly lowered the price of the car, such that one could pay for a weeks-long vacation in Europe to pick up and drive their car (we don't have autobahns here) and still come out spending less than having the car delivered to them in the US. The shipping was still handled and coordinated by BMW, all one had to do was show up to receive the car, then drop it off at the designated port before flying home and waiting for the car to be shipped to their local dealership. What's not to like? Many a BMW enthusiast dreamed of one day doing Euro Delivery if/when they could afford to buy a BMW new, and many a BMW enthusiast flew to Europe for a dream road trip tour of Europe. But then the program was quietly ended, with no particular reason given. Best guess is it was a very expensive marketing/PR program, and it was judged to not be worth the cost. So YES if they were to offer it again (hahaha good luck with that), and if I were to one day have the finances to buy a desirable BMW new (hahaha good luck with that), I would DEFINITELY want to do European Delivery. I have done it with re-delivery to my dealer. If I do it again, would be with delivery to the PC in South Carolina. Great experience doing break in overseas. A bit of a wait for it to cross the pond, but worth it.
