Engine failure
Sad day yesterday for my 2014 M6 comp package... I was driving about 15mph when the RPMs started to drop and a drivetrain malfunction flashed on the screen. Engine died within about 2 seconds. I turned the car off, turned it back on and the same thing happened (engine died within about 2 or 3 seconds). I noticed a strong smell of gasoline which could mean this is a fuel injector problem? Either way, I had to get the M6 towed to the BMW dealer. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any idea what the problem might be? This is the first problem I have had with the car.

I had a similar problem but my car did not die, but was misfiring like crazy and smoking out the tailpipes. Strong smell of fuel and tailpipe was wet with fuel. Injector had failed. Injectors, plugs and coils were all changed. It is not not uncommon for an injector to fail apparently. I know of one other M5 currently with a similar issue.

I heard a rapid clicking sound from the engine and the BMW dealer said it was the injectors and that its normal. Before the engine was smooth and quiet and the sound recently showed up. Could it be that my injectors are going to go bad?

Thanks for all the replies. I too think it may be a bad injector. Car is currently at the BMW shop, I'll be sure to post back when they diagnose the problem.

A failed injector can be catastrophic if when it fails it stays open by hydrolocking the engine.. If that had happened you would definitely know as the car would be misfiring and coughing splurging to hell an back an over fuelling which I know you mentioned the strong smell.
My old lci m6 v10 died this way but was luckily under BMW warrenty, without it the bill was £46,000. When the block was opened the rod was bent an the bore scored. |
