You are looking at a period of about twelve to eighteen months, possibly a year for the M variant. M6 Gran Coupe for example arrives this time next year.

The M6 Coupe and Convertible are Segler cars - meaning, like the 1M Coupe they were conceived under the leadership of Dr. Kay Segler .
Each M Division boss leaves their signature on each vehicle and with the M6 Coupe and Convertible you can see the genes of the 1M Coupe.

The M3 and M4 although started early development under Dr. Segler. The M3 and M4 are now being continued by the new M manager Dr. Friedrich Nitschke so it is his signature that will feature on these cars. Each M leaves a distinctive template and always tries to bring something new whether in a appearance , engineering or material or sometimes a new model for a new segment like the 1M or the forthcoming X4M which is something BMW has never offered before - A high performance activity vehicle in the entry segment and also a key area for growth in the entry performance segment.

The M6 for example is a distinctive car for a highly distinctive segment.
And also allows the transition for the M Brand to have the Core M models bookended by the M Performance cars.
Whereas the M3 and M4 is the entry segment's sports car so the overall look will commence with a fine balance between evolutionary and revolutionary in both appearance, material technology and engineering. It cannot just be a shrunken down M6, it has to have its own identity and in the case of the M4 even more so.

..I truly feel Carbon body panels will be the ///M future

@Frosty

BMW already stated they plan to be the first mass production automobile company to produce full carbon chassis across their entire line.... similar to what we see in the i3.

Way to expensive. Rather get a CLS with a V8 or S7.

M6 already has some, but as for it being a substantially used material, look here: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=652528

If so, which model will be competing with A5? I always assumed 4:er and 4:er GC were competitors to A5 & A5 sportback.

well the 4er will be the two door competition in this class, and as for the 4GC, we'll have to see how much longer the wheelbase is going to be to determine where it fits

The price on the 6GC is going to be a headache for sure to bmw, currently as it sits it is priced higher than the 740. when the 650gci comes out it will be probably priced probably higher than the M5 and the 750i. The 70-90k segment has gotten really cramped for BMW. It will be interesting to watch and see what BMW will do on the M5 pricing for the US.

Agree it's here to stay, but disagree with your assessment of the 7-series. I'm biased of course. And even bringing the Li version of the 5er here isn't going to supplant the rear-seat experience in an Li 7er, full stop. You've obviously never enjoyed a long drive in the back seat of an Li 7er with the luxury seating package. I have that option on my 740Li and am frequently told by passengers (friends and family alike) that it's the most comfortable experience they've ever had in the back seat of a car. Leg room (and head room) for DAYS and infinitely adjustable temperature controlled seats.

Now if they were to stretch the 6er Grand Coupé and actually give it some rear leg room, you might have a contender for replacing the 7-series (specifically the Li variant), but the 5er ain't gonna do it.

Well the stretched out GC was the Concept CS that they didnt feel was financially viable when it was cancelled, but my point was just about the economics of the 7er rather than the utility of the size. It just seem they sell fewer and fewer of these things and it may be time for a change direction. Perhaps they should revive the CS and replace the 7er with it, as if you are going to have something so big, might as well make it dramatic looking like the CS was, I just dont think there is place for both so that would have to be the decision point....

BMF has dropped the MF and raised residual on ALL 6 Series models!!! They also kept the $3500 cash and 750 loyalty and an additional 750 loyalty enhancement if youre bmw was totaled due to sandy. Either loyalty doesnt require a BMW FS account, just proof youve owned the car in the last 12 months and (for enhanced, letter from total loss assessment from insurance stating loss due to hurricane sandy). This is great for anyone who was waiting for a lease.
