The 114i is an embarrassment to BMW's reputation. The 116i is underpowered enough but the 14i won't pull the skin off a rice pudding!

The Gran Coupe however! Yes, JUST YES!

42.8mpg US doesn't seem that good; Autocar claims the 320d gets 64.2mpg combined UK which translates to 53.4mpg US

Yep, so you don't even get the advantage of economy with low power. It will have to be worked SO hard! The 116i does, it's bloody awful and it still doesn't move. When I had a 116i as a loaner for the day, I only got 33mpg (UK!!) because it has to be beaten to move anywhere and it was so reluctant to rev! I would go as far to say the 114i will be dangerous. Heavy car, very little power cannot get itself up to motorway speeds or navigate hilly roads easily. In my area especially, I would say this is dangerous.
Embarrassing!

The 114i is badge marketing at its best. Sorry BMW but it is true.

Are you sure you got the turbo version of 116i ? Or the old, naturally aspirated version ? I think the turbo version is quite enough for daily driving. Even the 114i. Also, I think the 114i can easily be chipped to 116i power.

The 116/114i are using the MINI Prince engine- right? The 1 Series is a bit heavier but not that much than the MINI if I recall so the 116i shouldn't be that bad but the 114i is a joke. BMW should have waited for the FWD car to go so down market.

I can't even imagine such little power in that car, sad. 0-60 in over 11 seconds is unbelievable for a brand that claims "shear driving pleasure" watching grass grow while accelerating is not pleasure!

that's a VW polo/golf wearing a BMW badge... Now all the country will want to have this shit.

That GC is to die for, but let's be real here, meet the new 7.

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

118i upwards. Anything below is a joke! Even the 18i isn't great! Get it in an E90 and it's awful. And uneconomical which is the biggest piss take!!
The 116d on the other hand. Acceptable. Wouldn't go as far to say it was good, but adequate. I never felt like I was a danger to myself or other road users. Fairly econmical...ish. 42mpg ish (UK).
118d, good actually. Could do to be a little more refined, but good. Plenty powerful and actually enough to have a little fun! Getting close to 50mpg because it doesn't need to be worked as hard.

The 114i will unfortunately, be useless. And as you say, is an insult to a performance brand who maintains "sheer driving pleasure" in all their cars.

That said, it'll still corner well and feel good to drive and is a nice car, but that's if you can get it up to speed, which will be difficult and expensive in petrol!

Is it balls!! It's RWD for a kick off! A far cry from a Polo and dissimilar to a Golf! The 1 Series is a very good car, but some of the engines in it are not up to scratch and just shouldn't be offered - namely the 14i and 16i.

I agree the new 7er is a handsome thing though! Oooh but I think I'd still take a 640d GC over an F01.

Maybe they wanted a rival for Golf 1,2 TSI (105 hp): this one has 10,6 sec acceleration from 0 to 100km/h and 190km/h v max. Average fuel consumption is 5,7.
My opinion is that these kind of engines are not proper for the compact segment!

On the other hand, 640d GC is an awesome car

Just heard more about that 114i..... they are prepping for the move to the 3 cylinder engine. They're bring this 114i out for about a year then bring the 115i out as an "upgrade" even though it has less cylinders (3) there will be more power and better economy- brilliant marketing move.

I'm sure there must be a reason for it, but I can't understand why BMW are producing the 114. I think I'd be scared to drive it outside of a city. On the other hand, were I to know for sure that I'd never need to take it out of the city, it might be a good choice.

I think the main reason is the 114i is cheaper than a 116i. By about 1,800 euros in base price. That would be reason enough for most Germans looking for a small compact car to buy. That is the reason why BMW is building this car. A BMW at a lower price point.

When you look at the technical specs... the two cars (114i vs 116i) are almost the same. Both are powered by a 1.6L turbo four. Both average 5.5L/100 kph. Both only pollute 132 grams/kilometer.

Btw the same engine is also used in the 118i, just with more boost and power.

114i 102 PS 180 Nm
116i 136 PS 220 Nm

Only in the US do people "live and die" by a car's zero to sixty times. Germans could car less about that. More important is a car's top speed and fuel economy. And how much they have to pay the tax man every year(to own a car, based on its grams of CO2 per kilometer).

114i 116i
0-100 kph (62 mph) 11.2 8.5
0-1000 meters 32.7 29.8
80 to 120 kph (4th/5th) 11.7/14.8 8.6/10.6
top speed: 195 kph 210 kph

Both cars are quite close in specs. Just that the in gear over taking is much better with the 116i. And it is no wonder with the x20d engine is BMW most popular power plant. You get more power/torque, use less fuel. A bmw with the x20d engine is BMW's bread and butter car(s). Be it a one, three, five or Xer!

TY for the explanation.

Perhaps you are right about US folks' concern with 0-60 times. I'm not one of them per se, but I do care to a point. Around here, we actually have entrance ramps onto highways whereon traffic moves at 105-110 kph, yet, folks entering from those ramps start from a standing stop. Getting up to speed to merge into that traffic would be quite a task in 114, or 116 for that matter. Then again, BMW don't sell those cars here, so it's likely a moot point.

Years ago, I had a 318i and, though not nearly as fast as either of the 3ers in my household today (one 328 and one 335) that car was fast enough for pretty much any daily driving situation. I would imagine that engine (a 4 cylinder) was quite similar to that in the 118 you mentioned above.

As you likely know, we haven't the CO2 tax you face there in DE; thanks for sharing that factor. I can imagine how it could be a determinant for some people.

The lower price point issue, based on info read here, seems to be a tactic BMW are pursuing in the US as well. And well they should as it seems entirely likely to me that, within a few years, one won't be able to get a well equipped (nav, upgraded radio, sunroof, xenons, heated seats and wheel) 3er for less than $45, which is my somewhat arbitrarily defined threshold for the maximum a basic, daily driver sort of car should cost. And even at that price, though I normally don't consider other car brands, I would shop the competition. I would imagine there are many folks who share my view. I would imagine I'm a fairly typical US BMW customer.

I'm in my early 50s, divorced, with three kids. Since 2007, I've bought three 3ers (my own, one for my daughter in college and one for a family member who suffered great misfortune) and just ordered another for my son who'll be off to college this fall. I've got a few years to go before it'll be time to get my last son a car, but I hope BMW won't have priced themselves out of the running.
