Considering upgrading from E92 M3 to M6 Coupe

Hey all,

Been thinking about the possibility of selling my M3 and moving up an M6 Coupe within the next year. I'm a big and tall guy, and lately I've been feeling like my E92 is just a tad cramped, especially in the seat bolster department. Had an opportunity to sit in an M6 this weekend and I was very comfortable in the driver's seat. I could probably afford up to a 2014, but I'm wondering what the differences are between the various years for this generation of M6. Is there already an LCI year of this car? I noticed headlights being different, but are there any other major differences? Any well-known problems these cars have that I should look out for?

Except the front and rear headlights there is a very minor difference on rear diffuser and iDrive. You will enjoy the drive of M6 for sure. Is your M3 manual or DCT?

So if I were to go with a 2013 or 14 I wouldn't be missing much? My M3 is a DCT.

I went from and E93 to an early F12 and they are night and day different. The F12 is more comfortable, has better tech, is faster, has a much larger trunk, has the same useless back seat and overall is a much nicer car. The only drawback to me is the size. It is huge! Its as long as my partners 7 series, and longer than my wife's cayenne. I have already nicked the left front clip twice. Parking in tight spaces is a pain in the rear.

When I decided to upgrade I looked at the M4, the Jag F Type, the Jag XKR, the Corvette and others (in the 60-75k range) and the M6 was my favorite.

I believe that my 2015 got the new NBT head unit/iDrive.

Thanks for the good info! So the NBT system is 2014 or 2015 onward, correct? My M3 is a 2013, so I believe I have the CIC. When it was in for service, I had a 2015 loaner X5 that had the NBT system and it was very nice. I've even considered upgrading my M3's nav to NBT, as it's apparently possible. What system did the 2013 M6 have? CIC like my M3? Might be a reason to wait until 2014s or 2015s depreciate a bit.

I owned a car with the NBT system and while nice, it is not worth much to me over the cic system in your M3 and my M6. Also, I think the switch was my2015. NBT is a litttle sharper, has a larger controller and some widgets. Same hd size amd no apple play in the M6. However, the comp pack in the later M6s, plus the ability to get a better steering wheel might be another reason to wait/buy newer (older M6s can't easily upgrade steering wheel w/o major surgery)

Steering wheel? My 2013 M6 had the same steering wheel the new one has. I think you are talking about steering wheel on M5.

The M5 definitely came with the other steering wheel but even the first press release photos show the M6 with the newer wheel

I am talking about the ability to upgrade to a BMW Performance Steering Wheel. I believe that M6s built before 7/13 require extra part replacements to upgrade.

Thanks for the info, I was looking at 2014s and noticed the tell-tale larger iDrive controller. That large controller feels so much nicer than the clicky wheel of the CIC system. 2014 was when the M6 got the power boost to 575 as well, right? And it can be factory coded to the 600 horsepower? Hard to keep track of all the packages.

Would it be possible to get a 2014 that has the Competition Package?

2014 could be ordered with comp package.

Normal power is the same throughout the years. CP is where things changes a bit.

2013 560norm no-cp
2014 560norm 575cp
2015 560norm 575cp
2016 560norm 600cp
2017 560norm 600cp
