Tesla Model S?
Would any one consider buying a Tesla Model S P85+ instead of 650 GC? Or dare I say it an M6 GC?...
As BMW is gearing up to offer an all Electric a few years down the road. I think this is a legitimate question even for die hard BMW fans.... |

It's not apple to apple comparison. Exterior, Interior, Engine,... everything is far away. To me only the engine sound is good enough to go for 650 or M6, but people have their opinion. look at this guy:

I considered a tesla but went with the 650. Unless you live in Cali, or only drive at most 100 miles a day, the infrastructure just isn't in place yet.
Only the super chargers have usable recharge times if you find yourself in the middle of the day low on battery. Everything else is measured in hours just to get 25-50% charge. I love the idea of all electric (doesn't matter what brand) but the battery capacity and recharge network just isn't here yet. Maybe in 5 years. |

I would have totally considered it if
1. It had AWD 2. It had a V8 Ok, #2 is tongue and cheek - but what I mean by that is the days of having a V8 car are numbered and I am really going to miss the sound of that. So if possible, I will continue to get a V8 as long as they are around and gas is not incredibly expensive.

I would if it has soft closing doors, head up display, nicer interior AND better shut lines. The paint finish is good but those shut lines are a non starter specially around the details at the back end.
Some of this is exaggerated by inexperience in flow design and some by the fact that its a bitch pressing aluminum in precise shape. You need years of experience to do that . I however welcome this car and what it represents...perhaps next time... |

If you are getting a M6 which I suspect you will take on a track, M6 is the best choice. Tesla S on a track runs out of juice very quickly or even highway speeds of 80-85.
Tesla is over hyped with a jihadi fan base. |

Tesla has lower C of G turns flatter, high low end torque makes it hard to handle by traditional racers, but it will give the 650 a real run but the M6? Not to sure either. The very fact that this knowledgeable BMW fan base is discussing the model S is a testament to the car's success and triumph for the laws of physics. ?.

In fact this is the very best environment for an EV. When you are stopped you use no juice and when you are moving slowly you use little power.

Drove a Tesla Model S today for about 30 mins.
A very impressive vehicle and excellent for a medium distance daily commute, very quiet and handles surprisingly well. Lots of luggage space and even two small rear facing seats for kids on a school run. The large touch screen is impressive. Interior quality appeared reasonable, but not on par with the M6 GC or anywhere near. Low speed acceleration is excellent, on a par with the M6 in the 30-50 range and is immediate when you floor it. However, above 50 the acceleration tails off quite rapidly, although it's not exactly slow. In the 70+ range it's about in line with the M6 in 7th gear, the M6 in 3rd gear will pull away very rapidly. |

My two biggest issues with the Model S is (1) range anxiety and (2) the rather tacky interior.
I think I'll wait for the next generation Model S when either battery life is extended or there are more charging stations, and Tesla finds some extended Merino leather. But otherwise, it's a fantastic car and I would seriously consider it over any iteration of the 6-series. M included. |

I agree with the previous posts although I like the look. The GC looks better though. The range estimates are ambiguous. I assume most BMW drivers average higher than normal speed limits when driving. The Tesla wouldn't last 100 miles on a charge when you are driving the way (I assume) we drive our cars. This car is not a viable option for me until the battery can withstand aggressive driving over a longer period of time.

I don't think electric is ready for prime time yet. It may become the standard someday, but is a few breakthroughs away. We tend to forget that most of the "clean" electricity in these new car batteries was generated using fairly dirty fuels.
Best trade offs today come from clean diesel. Next gen fuel race is barely underway. Science will engineer new power sources and storage media. Hydrogen? New light battery (breakthrough)? Truly efficient new source, solar (breakthrough)?

You are correct. AC cranking, music cranking, brake lights, DTRLs, drive system in standby mode - all these things use electricity. Surely not as much as when driving, but even sitting still you're draining power, unless everything is shut off.

Almost everything is insignificant compared to driving.
Think about it. An LED brake light is about 3W, LED head lights are about 20W. The battery pack is 85KWh, that would run a single head light for 4,250 hours or 177 days. By far the biggest draw apart from the motor is the cabin heater followed by the A/C. |

I was debating on a similar question. The 640i GC vs Tesla 85. It comes to practicality. I put 25k miles on my car per year due to lots of long hauls. There's no way I will sit at a coffee shop for an hour to wait for a re-charge every 250miles (being optimistic). Plus, I don't want a first gen Tesla S. I would wait for the battery to get lighter and charge quicker before pulling the trigger on this technology. I believe the battery on the P85 weighs 1,500lbs. If the battery weighs 500lbs, range 500miles, and charge in 15min then I would pay $100k for it.
