High Oil Consumption issue

Hi All

I think I have posted the issue on the forum before.
My car, 13 plate, 16000 miles only has been prompting oil refill messages since ive bought the car ( feb 2016) every 300-350 miles.

The dealer is doing nothing about it, BMW standard service guideline indicates a litre of oil consumed every 600 as normal.

This is excessive.

I have also noticed yesterday some excessive burnt oil/carbon build up on the tailpipes, the edges look like burnt coal.

Someone behind me on the road the other evening also noticed blue smoke out the tailpipes which I later couldn't replicate.
In neutral while accelerating moderately/heavy I did notice smatter of smoke.

A friend has suggested it could be turbo related, if the seals are broken the oil can seep through the waste gate, hence the high consumption.

Can anyone here share their expertise?

Regards

1) Which dealer are you using ?

2) Have they declined to carry out an official oil consumption test (or something similar to this) ? I presume not.

3) What is the exact brand / type of oil are you refilling with ? Does it always request 1 Litre to be added ?

If you drive hard then let the car slow down in gear and then floor the throttle and accelerate hard and you see quite a bit of smoke out the back, or someone following can confirm, then it could be piston ring issues allowing excessive 'blow by'. It could also indicate a faulty / clogged crankcase ventilation system causing crank case gases to be sucked back into inlet manifold and burning off rather than returning to the sump. I think the S63TU set up is like this....

Or it could be turbo seals but not sure on this.

I believe the BMW guideline MAX consumption is 1000 KM per Litre equating to circa 416 Miles per Litre. If you can prove that you are consuming more and the car is still under the factory warranty, in theory they should fit a new engine for you free of charge.

I think I spoke to you about this before. I am quite surprised by the attitude of your dealer. Did you buy the car as a BMW AUC ?

Make sure you extend your warranty , blue smoke is never a good sign.If your dealer won't sort it , make a complaint to BMWUK.

Hi Chaps

Many thanks for your input.

I have already logged my complaint with BMW UK they are all aware along with Sytner Nottingham who advised that I carry on with HR owen Park royal which is a useless branch TBH, bunch of liars!

Currently I don't see much smoke coming out, its a smatter of white smoke here and there. Since the oil replacement which I insisted they did, its about 100 miles short of my next due visit where they will measure how much oil has been consumed. Hopefully next week Monday.
Will keep you posted.

Yes its always asking for a litre to be added, the message pops up around 300-350 miles, however since the oil replacement it hasn't done so, but never speak so soon!!
The car was bought on a HP deal with 50% deposit towards the car.

OK good, so lets see the result of the next oil measurement by them.

I have a funny feeling they have been using the wrong weight/spec oil in your car.....well just a thought anyway.

When the car prompted you to add a litre, which oil did you use to top it up please ?

I can empathize, I get about 700 miles between refills. I go directly to the parts department and complain and they have given me many free bottles of oil. My service guy said that is within spec and that I needed to drive the car harder.

You need a leak down test to determine if it is oil leaking. I have owned lots of M cars and the oil consumption has varied greatly between 1-5k miles, this one is the worse.

Are you using MW 5W-30 Twinpower Turbo Longlife Synthetic Oil or some other brand?

“Oil consumption is normal on all engines,” BMW spokesman Hector Arellano-Belloc said in an e-mailed statement. “BMW vehicles have long intervals between oil changes (10,000 miles). BMW engines (excluding the BMW M) may consume up to one quart of engine oil per 750 miles under certain driving conditions.” He added that BMW’s M performance models may consume even more oil than that.

Every 300-350 miles is not normal at all, even if S63 is known for oil consumption. It's almost like you have to top both the tank and the engine oil every time.

Can you -please advise how to get the oil leak test carried out, especially where there is no evidence of any oil residue in the suspected places.
I agree you with your frustration about their dismissive attitude towards this problem.

On my previous car V10 m6, towards the end of my ownership I had higher consumption as well, but it was around 800-1200 miles.
These cars are known for excessive oil usage.
The oil spec is 5W-30 designed for Turbo engines, its a generic oil spec for all turbo models across the spectrum which I absolutely hate. V10 engines were so individual as we had a oil specifically designed for that.

Can you please identify the exact oil you add yourself ?

From what you have stated above, I think it may be incorrect.

It's not oil for all turbo BMW across the board.

Took this from my manual for F13 M6, quite clearly states 0w-40 but does not state what Acea spec, I take it will be fully synthetic with no additives

BMW 5W-30 Twinpower Turbo Longlife Synthetic Oil Part Number: 83212365946

The BMW 5W30 motor oil is the factory engine oil approved for almost all BMW engines, except for BMW Diesel and some M3/M5/M6 engines. It's the first oil approved in the US for BMW's turbo N20 N54 N55 engines, including the S55 engine in the 2015+ F80 M3/F82 M4

Have not tried this: BMW 0W30 Engine Oil Part Number: 83212365950

BMW's newest TwinPower Turbo engine oil is LL01 FE+ certified. It meets BMW's standards for LongLife 2001 ("LL01") and improved fuel economy ("FE+"). The new 0W30 replaces the previous 5W30 oil used in some 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder, and V8 BMW models. As of December 2015, BMW has not backdated the 0W30 for any other engines but the LL01 rating might indicate it will be the new approved oil for most engines (and replace #83212365946 5W30 oil).

All very confusing when it comes to BMW oils again :

Not really, 10-60 is a no go, only nor non-aspirated M engines, the Gold replaces the silver, though they still sell the silver. I believe the Gold oil may be better for extreme cold starts.

Fully aware of the 10W-60 (as per the circa 250 Litres I bought for my oil burning E39 M5).

Gold replaces Silver that's good !

So what about *945 ? : LL01 0W-40 (BMW M TwinPower Turbo)

So what about *945 ? : LL01 0W-40 (BMW M TwinPower Turbo) is an older oil as a backup for the 10-60 when not available and only for naturally aspirated M cars with V8 or V10.

Yeah ok, but it does state M5/M6 EXCEPT older than 2010 and M3 EXCEPT older than 2013...which I read as ONLY the FI ones and NOT the NA ones
